Red Light, Green Light, Yellow Light Mess in Redlands

Monday, June 30th, 2008

There’s something in the city of Redlands that needs to be addressed. It’s a problem that I’ve only seen get worse over the years. It’s not necessarily pollution or street violence, but it is irritating. The problem is street light timers. You see, on many intersections in the city, the timer seems to be way off. Giving an inordinate amount of time for driving one way verses the other.

Just last night, I was driving on Tennessee Ave towards the 10 freeway, and I’m stopped at the light at the Colton Street intersection. It was one o’ clock on a Monday morning and nobody was around. I was tired and waiting there for probably 8 minutes for the light to change to green. Which was probably about 6 minutes too long. But the problem in not simply that light. Many other lights around the city are equally as aggravating on a daily basis.

One stop light in particular, on San Bernardino Ave., has a sensor that changes the color of the light when seemingly a light breeze passes through. I always get stopped there. Even after the light has turned green, if a car is approaching from the intersecting street, it will immediately turn to yellow then red. There are several other lights just like this in the area. I don’t understand why this problem has not been addressed. It’s well-known that website design in Redlands is lacking, but does basic street light maintenance and upkeep have to be lacking as well?

Keeping the Windows Registry Operational By Cleaning It Regularly

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The registry is where the computer stores information about the configuration of the system and the programs installed so that the operating system can use them.

Regularly maintaining the registry is a basic requirement. Fixing problems after they occur is harder than preventing them in the first place. Windows registry problems can cause crashes, slow performance and error messages.

If you:

- Install or uninstall software on a regular basis

- have not removed software correctly

- have embedded Spyware or any third party programs that start up again with each boot [whether you installed them or not]

- have installed or uninstalled hardware

- you have drivers on your system that are no longer needed.

Then you absolutely need to be cleaning your windows registry regularly! All the above leave trace elements of themselves behind that build up over time and choke the registry. Think of it as like dusting. Don’t dust and you end up with dust bunnies, allergies and sneezing; you don’t feel well and you slow down… Get the picture?

Back up your registry. Basic rule of thumb in the computing world - Back Up, Back Up, Back Up. System meltdowns and viruses can require the complete reinstalling of windows on your computer, which means you run the risk of losing all your files. Keep them safe. Back them up.

1. Don’t try and edit anything in the registry yourself unless you are completely familiar with it and with the system

2. Programs are available that can be installed and set to fix and reguarly maintain your registry. Search online or drop in to your local computer store.

3. Call in a professional. Ask your friends for a reliable technician or look one up in the Yellow Pages

Z-WaveTM - the Next Standard?

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Zensys describes Z-Wave technology as “an RF based, two-way, mesh network, communications protocol that enables everyday devices to be controlled and monitored wirelessly.” And indeed it is. It’s become popular enough that at least 125 manufacturers have joined the Z-Wave Alliance (www.z-wavealliance.com) and are developing or redesigning products to support the protocol.

Superna Corporation, manufacturers of the Superna Home Control Systems featured on this site, is one of the newest members of the Alliance, and it expects its Smart Home Automation Systems to support Z-Wave in a matter of months. Intel Capital also has made a strategic investment in Zensys and in Z-Wave Alliance member iControl in Palo Alto, CA, which has developed a software and services platform designed to make remote monitoring more affordable and accessible for both homes and businesses.

One reason Z-Wave is growing in popularity is that it’s fundamentally simple to use. The mesh system makes it possible for any switch or control unit to be connected with the system as long as it can communicate with any other unit. Using 900-MHz Radio Frequency for communications, its interactive distance is limited to a few dozen feet, which makes it fairly unsusceptible to interference from outside sources.

Z-Wave is very low-power (and therefore has a minimal operating cost), and Zensys’s integrated MCU/Transceiver chips embedded with Z-Wave allow countless products to incorporate the protocols. Coupled with Zensys’s “suite of development tools ad services,” manufacturers can easily develop wireless products based on Z-Wave.

The Z-Wave Alliance participated in “CONNECTIONS(TM): The Digital Home Conference” the week of May 1, which I was unfortunately not able to attend in person. But the Alliance invited member companies ControlThink, Cooper Wiring Devices, Density Networks, iControl, Intel, Intermatic, Leviton, the Linksys Division of Cisco, Monster, SMK Electronics, Universal Electronics (UEI), and Zensys to discuss their use of Z-Wave for digital home control products and services.

On the Z-Wave Alliance web site we found this interesting statement from Lew Brown, director of strategic business development for Monster.

“There are more than 100 Z-Wave-enabled products already on the market today for consumers including USB devices, universal remote controls, thermostats and lighting systems. And every single one of them works together, making it very simple and inexpensive for consumers to deploy a home control network. There is not another technology out there that can make that claim.”

What makes that particularly exciting is that it indicates a corporate view and support of the flexibility of using Z-Wave protocol. As exciting as it is to have manufacturers creating, in effect, their own new standard by working together, consumers - the end users - get the real benefit by being able to integrate products from manufacturers as different as Leviton, Monster, and UEI without customizing or replacing them.

Keep your eyes peeled for more news about Z-Wave; it might well be the next, and the longest-lasting, industry standard.

Well, why not go for it, and relax at the same time. But be sure that you won’t get gripped and throw away your entire income capriciously. Because else chances are you’ll end up in grief for the rest of your life.

Landscaping Tips: Japanese Garden Fundamentals

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

The Japanese style of landscaping has the goal of recreating the serenity of a natural environment. Fundamental ingredients used include carefully placed stone, statuary, bonsai, and fish ponds. Bonsai is a traditional technique of training small trees to encourage their growth into certain shapes; it is one of the Japanese arts. Relaxing strolls through the garden are laid out with formal paths.

A number of basic guidelines apply when planning Japanese landscaping. The first being that plants and other elements not be located symmetrically. Nature is asymmetrical. Flowers and trees don’t naturally grow lined up in rows or in square formations. The impression to aim for is a space that does not look man-made.

Another guideline of Japanese landscaping is that it must not be crowded. Because yards can be small, sometimes people want to fit in as many plants as possible. This can easily end up looking chaotic and messy. Just like with the Japanese sense of interior decorating, a minimum of plants cleverly arranged can generate an innate harmony of visual calm.

A roughly triangular pattern appears commonly in Japanese landscaping. For example, there are three plants you want to plant, the largest is located first as an anchor point of the triangle. The next largest becomes the second point on the triangle, and the third largest plant the other point. This arrangement helps balance the aesthetic mass of the three elements.

Symbolic meanings are associated with plants and other elements used in Japanese landscaping. Deciduous trees, for example, like the colorful Japanese maple, stand for the change that is constant all through life, since they show a different aspect of themselves every season. On the other hand, evergreen trees stand firm and stable. In order for something always to be in bloom in the garden, flowers are often planted that will bloom sequentially. The colors seen in a Japanese landscape garden tend to be pastel and subtle. In fact, subtle is a good word to keep in mind when planning out your Japanese landscape garden.

Life Insurance

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

The idea of using life insurance to solve financial problems after death is almost as old as the hills. People have a tendency to approach this in a manner that can be described as too casual at times. Sometimes sufficient thought is not given to the impact on the family if the breadwinner, or breadwinners, do not own sufficient insurance to replace the incomes after death. It may be that people are so afraid of death that they develop some type of mental block. The amazing thing is that I see so many intelligent people who don’t want to think about life insurance.

I have spent over 40 years in this business and I have seen families in pure panic after the death of their father and husband. On the other hand I have seen a wife bury her husband with such dignity and an open expression of love and respect for him that there are no words to sufficiently describe it. He left his wife and his children financially secure for the rest of their lives. They could continue living in the same house. The children could continue going to the same school, they could continue their same extra curricular activities, they continued wearing nice clothing. Money was available for college. All of these things guaranteed because the husband and father took the time to prepare for death. There was sufficient income for the wife he loved so deeply to live out her days very comfortably. Life insurance did not replace the husband but it kind of made him immortal in a way.

All this may sound like a fairy tale to many but ask any insurance agent who has been in this business for many years. Sometimes the beauty of the thing brings you to tears.

How can the average person do the same for their families. You first must decide how much life insurance you need…then start off with term life insurance. The reason I recommend this is not that I have any great bias against permanent insurance but term insurance is simply cheaper. Most people cannot afford permanent insurance. I have a passion for the 20 year term and the 30 year term policies. As you progress you can convert your policies if you choose to something like a universal life policy which allows for flexibility in premium payment as well as death benefit amount.

Take some time to examine life insurance and what product would best fit your needs.

For more than 40 years Donald has been known for his extensive knowledge of the life insurance business. He has represented some of the largest and best life insurance companies in the United States as well as Canada. His advice is invaluable.

The Popular Laptop Trends At The Present

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

There has been a big frenzy for laptop computers recently. But take note if you want the most up to date tech than you need to cultivate some patience as there could be component shortages. Its actually amazing that credit predicaments and all haven’t dented this demand for laptops either. The technology loops are so minute too which makes it all the more harder.

Gaming notebooks have recently been enticing a lot of interest. With prices coming down and new technology being released rather rapidly it means that buyers are getting increased roi. I play games on my notebook on a frequent basis and must say I’m surprised how playable few of the intense games are. I also feel that a few gaming notebooks look really good, with some sleek, powerful features. Still there is a major gap between the performance of portables and computers however desktop computers are more roomy to allow for better cooling and airflow that all help. Gaming notebooks are always pushing the speed limits of laptop compputers so its always a true yardstick of how far the technology has come in that relation.

Custom built notebooks have been here for a great length of time now and despite big companies trading pre-built notebooks through shops it seems like there will constantly be system builders out there ready to assemble something unique to your desires. With international brands you normally don’t have a clue what they fit into the notebook. Particular sectors benefit because they only have procure what they require. Most of the notebooks found in highstreet shops are made to get the utmost market share and not the smaller niche markets. Custom notebooks allow a fix to this. Increased levels of customer care and support can also be found when buying custom built notebooks. Yet another good point.

It certainly will exciting to see what gets introduced next. I forgot to speak of the large growth of internet devices and notebook computers. They have their individual sector in the mobile computer market in such a little space of time. I feel the market would prefer to see bigger portables that weigh a lot less than the current units. There are portables like this in the market already, just at high prices. I am certain we’ll see ultra portable gaming notebooks in the near future. There’s no knowing what laptops we’ll see but certainly there will be numerous.

I actually like the gaming laptops from rizeon.

Things to Consider when Buying a Hot Tub or Jacuzzi Tub

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

We recently purchased a new Hot Tub and Gazebo from Cal Spas in Minnesota. The purchase was not something we planned, just something that caught our eye when visiting the Minnesota State Fair. As a result we learned a few things that would have made our purchase smarter. In the end we’re pleased with the decision but its easy to say now that all the work is done. In this article I’ll outline the information I wish I had considered when making this purchase. I hope it helps you in your decision.

The Tub

This isn’t going to be a detailed rundown on what to look for in a good tub or who to buy it from. I’ll leave that to the other articles out on the internet. There are two points I’ll make of things I may have changed. We purchased the top of the line system, the only thing it lacked was an LCD monitor and DVD player.

So what would I change?

Well after using it for a season I find that the multitude of jets is irrelevant for me. I am more of a soaker and actually prefer that the jets aren’t all blasting. Its too much noise and I don’t like the splashing. So I would look for something at a better price point and give up some of the fancy jets in favor of more common ones.

A friend of mine paid 1/2 of my cost for a more basic unit and he couldn’t be happier.

So where would I put this money?

I would ALWAYS splurge and get the stereo and speakers built into the tub. My wife insisted on this and it added quite a bit to the price but I wouldn’t want it any other way. The tub uses a marine radio/CD player with water proof speakers and a remote controller on the top side of the tub. You can easily hear the music and I even ran a TV in through the Auxiliary so we can hear the TV through the tub speakers. My friend who didn’t buy this feature is left with setting up elaborate wiring and remote control extenders to get his stereo to play outside.

Another feature I’d suggest is fiber optic lighting. There are a bunch of small lights around the top of the tub that change color. At first glance it looks like this would just be to make it fancy. Try the tub at night and you’ll find they provide a great deal of light which makes the tub much easier to use. It also helps when messing around outside the tub with CD’s Drinks Towels, Chemicals etc.

My friend again, is stringing rope lighting.

So in a nutshell on the tub, consider the stereo and fiber optics and if necessary go with less jets to cover the cost.

Gazebo Information

My wife insisted on a Gazebo surrounding the tub and for years I put off the purchase because I didn’t want to spend another $7000.00 on a Gazebo. Once we took the plunge I’d say that for the Minnesota winters I’d have it no other way. I have neighbors that freeze climbing in and out and maintaining their spa. Ours is like another room in the house and is quite warm in the winter due to the heat from the tub.

Now a word of advice.

My buddy purchased an 8×8 Gazebo that basically encloses the tub with no extra space. They climb up stairs and go through the windows of the gazebo to get in the tub. On a showroom this looks like a fine arrangement. Well this winter his wife climbs in, closes the windows to keep the cold out and finds herself trapped in the gazebo. They had to damage the windows getting it open due to the condensation that froze the window shut. My smart wife insisted we purchase a larger gazebo. We went with a 12×12 that had racks and storage for chemicals and towels. It also has built in lights which are a bonus.

The important thing to note about this decision is that I enter the gazebo through a sliding door, not the window. If anything freezes it will be the windows by the tub not the ones opposite the room and the sliding door. Additionally its just nice to have a new room on the house and the cost relative to the benefits isn’t bad at all. Plus we have room for a bar and stools in there.

Preparation and Additional Costs

Here are a few things to consider in your decision they either provided additional cost or hard work on my part.

Electrical: You’ll most likely need a dedicated 50 amp circuit with a breaker box in plain view of the tub. In our case this meant digging a 36 inch deep trench from the garage to the gazebo (50 feet) so the electrician could run the conduit. The cost of the electrical work was about $1000.00 and I had to dig the trench myself. My buddy did his own electrical and still spent $500.00 in parts so keep that in mind.

Cement: I also needed a new cement slab to accommodate my tub and gazebo. We put in a 14×15 slab to accomplish this. What I did not consider was that cement has gone way up in price since my last 10×10 slab. We spent almost $2000.00 for the labor and materials to have this poured. What I also did not consider was the work of removing the grass from that area. This took three days of exhausting work cutting strips of sod and hauling them to the disposal site.

Gazebo: What I did not consider and was not told by the sales rep was that immediately upon erecting the gazebo, we’d need to stain it to seal the wood from the weather. This is a 12×12 structure I hadn’t considered staining. Let me just say it was a day of hard work which will need to be done at least every other year.

Additional Items to Consider

A few additional items you may want to consider purchasing.

Cover Helper: The covers of these hot tubs are not easy to move around by yourself. This is especially true in a Gazebo. They sell cover helpers which are lever type devices that life the cover mechanically and put it behind the tub. Unfortunately for me my wife wants the tub against the wall so we’re stuck either using 1/2 the tub or man handling the heavy cover. This is my pet peeve about tubs. So if you have the room or consider making the room, this will make your spa much more enjoyable.

Portable Utility Pump: Tubs have a gravity drain at the bottom but these can take all day to drain a tub. My neighbor was smart and purchased a utility pump or sump pump at the local Home Depot or Menards. This drained the tub in about an hour and let us get to work cleaning and refilling fairly quick. After borrowing his I went right out and picked one up for about $70.00 For those of you who’ve drained a waterbed without a pump you’ll know why this is a good investment.

Hose for adding water: Just like with my waterbeds, I prefer to purchase a special hose for adding water to the tub. I keep it inside so it stays clean and not frozen. Tubs evaporate water at a surprisingly fast rate so plan on adding water once a month or so.

In Home Jacuzzi Tubs

When we built our house we splurged and added one of those large two person Jacuzzi tubs with six jets. I thought we’d be in heaven and was reminiscing of nights spent in the Jacuzzi suites in a hotel. What I didn’t consider is the following and because it these things, it functions more as an ornament to make the bathroom look grand.

Filling: These things take time to fill, by the time its filled do you still need or want that bath?

Hot Water: Filling these will drain your water heater down unless you’ve planned for extra capacity. I find that the water for my pre bath shower isn’t very warm once I’ve filled the tub.

Cleaning: Ok so I’m lazy but just like a hot tub, you have to clean the tub and jets and the larger the tub the more work it is just to keep the dust out.

I hope my thoughts have given you something to consider and plan when making a large purchase such as a spa or gazebo. All things considered I’d do it again if I moved but I’d be a little smarter and save money and effort.

Enjoy the Staggering Windsor Castle

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Windsor Castle is believed to be the largest lived in castles around & the eldest in nonstop occupation (over nine hundred years). It is one of Queen Elizabeth’s 3 authorised residences, & is regularly alleged to be easily her much beloved home. The Royal flag flies over the Round Tower of Windsor Castle whilst the Queen is at the residence - however, at other periods, the Union Jack banner flutters instead. Click here to visit the Enjoy England website.

Samuel Pepys once mentioned Windsor Castle to be “the single most idealistic castle on the planet.” That was alleged in 1666, & the same is true today.

Windsor Castle Enthralling History:

The foundation of Windsor can be located in the beginning of the seventh century Saxon hamlet of Windlesora, where the current day community of Old Windsor is sited. The settlement of Windsor is traditionally identified as “New Windsor” - the actual phrase “new” being taken in a strictly relative way!

Windsor Castle at the start was erected by the distinguished William the Conqueror, on account of his attack of England in ten sixty six. The original frame was assembled from timber with ground barricades. Palace held an understandable strategic position on a steep hill above the River Thames, & was part of a group of palaces in the region the City, with the Tower of London, one whole days journey away, at its centre.

The Castle was soon reassembled in stone, & rose in importance over the centuries. Later on Henry II redesigned the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the building’s main role became that of a royal residence. The Castle has stayed almost totally unchanged from the start of the 19th century, apart from the repair work following the recent fire in 1992.
