Enjoy the Staggering Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is believed to be the largest lived in castles around & the eldest in nonstop occupation (over nine hundred years). It is one of Queen Elizabeth’s 3 authorised residences, & is regularly alleged to be easily her much beloved home. The Royal flag flies over the Round Tower of Windsor Castle whilst the Queen is at the residence - however, at other periods, the Union Jack banner flutters instead. Samuel Pepys once mentioned Windsor Castle to be “the single most idealistic castle on the planet.” That was alleged in 1666, & the same is true today.
Windsor Castle Enthralling History:
The foundation of Windsor can be located in the beginning of the seventh century Saxon hamlet of Windlesora, where the current day community of Old Windsor is sited. The settlement of Windsor is traditionally identified as “New Windsor” - the actual phrase “new” being taken in a strictly relative way!
Windsor Castle at the start was erected by the distinguished William the Conqueror, on account of his attack of England in ten sixty six. The original frame was assembled from timber with ground barricades. Palace held an understandable strategic position on a steep hill above the River Thames, & was part of a group of palaces in the region the City, with the Tower of London, one whole days journey away, at its centre.
The Castle was soon reassembled in stone, & rose in importance over the centuries. Later on Henry II redesigned the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the building’s main role became that of a royal residence. The Castle has stayed almost totally unchanged from the start of the 19th century, apart from the repair work following the recent fire in 1992.
