How to choose a managed wide area network provider?

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

One of the easy things to do when discussing the products and services available on the market is to wax lyrical about the way the market is going, the best solutions that you can buy and the most cost effective results you can achieve. And in an extremely dynamic industry, such as IT, there is plenty to talk about. We all know that there are constantly evolving solutions and a parade of suppliers who can provide them.

But rather than talk about the best technology, I think it would be useful just to swing the debate over to the issue of the Supplier. Recently one of our customers, ‘The Firewall Warehouse’ implemented a broadband VPN for it’s 3 offices and centralised warehouse that are spread across the UK.

Nick Johnson, Director of The Firewall Warehouse said, ‘For the management team the technological argument and the financial benefit derived was not really an issue. Where we struggled was with our choice of supplier.’

Johnson went on, ‘the problem was that we treated the sale as a commodity and didn’t really respect the fact that connecting our business up and passing our vital data between sites was, in reality, one of the most important things on our agenda. Sure, we understood it all, but we really should have made sure that we understood the product source, the delivery schedule, the time we needed to invest and the fact that those who provide you with critical solutions need to be close to you and your business.’

‘As it so happens we ended up with a good delivery and a solution that is fast, robust, capable and secure, but only after we realised that we were not paying enough attention to the deal and consequently put our own management efforts into play, which incidentally was not that arduous.’

The lessons ‘The Firewall Warehouse’ learnt were that you need to do a bit of basic research yourself before kicking off the supplier process.

The web is a fantastic source of information, as we all know and by searching ‘VPN network’ ‘managed VPN’, ‘managed broadband’, and a few other similar phrases, it is possible to become that much brighter and informed. But equally important is to understand what is behind the marketing web pages, what do the network providers actually do?

Now, even in the commodity sale, not all vendors offer the same product or service. For a start, don’t ever believe that broadband is just broadband. It comes in various guises and is delivered with varying levels of quality and efficiency.

Some of the better known names do not necessarily offer you the best quality broadband and quite frankly the delivery and customer care capabilities are woefully inadequate for the small and medium sized business. So it’s important to understand your vendors offering. What contention rates and speeds are on offer for a start? And if you can get into a discussion with a supplier about this you will find that one who has knowledge of the topic and an understanding of how best to network a business will really give you that added comfort.

Additionally you need to know how good the service is and there are two issues that need some real clarity. The first of these is Reliability.

Now the answer to reliability is not just a simple claim of being reliable. What you need to be told is the structure of the network and an explanation of how they intend to provide you with the usual spiel about 99.999999% guaranteed uptime. This revolves around how they have built their network and how they can demonstrate a lack of network congestion. The least reliable infrastructure will be the one that packs as many people as it can on to a limited network. Conversely, the better network is that which can cope with lots of traffic as well as having a lot of free capacity.

Which brings up the second issue; namely that of Latency. This again needs explained to you by the supplier and they need to convince you that there is low latency on their network because they are being generous with the capacity and not overburdening their infrastructure with users. It’s the same issue as that of reliability; less conscientious suppliers will push lots of traffic across a smaller network, whereas more conscientious vendors will make sure that there is loads of capacity and will be able to talk confidently about their high reliability and low latency.

Whilst you are digging deep into the knowledge bank of your supplier you would also be well advised to talk to them about the provision of voice over the managed VPN. Voice can be run across your broadband VPN, but not all suppliers really know how to do this or are capable of doing it. But be aware, this is something that is happening and will become more and more popular. Because of this a good supplier will be either encouraging you to run voice over your managed VPN now or setting your expectations to do it as part of your medium term planning.

But knowing about the technology and how it applies to you is important, but equally so is their knowledge of process. So many times you can place orders and then be lost in a sea of promises. A good supplier will guide you as to what they will do, but also as to what you need to do. You don’t need to spend hours on working with the supplier but you do need to be in synch with their programme and understand what they are delivering, when they are delivering and basically when to flick the switch.

A good supplier will have a combination of automation and human resource. You should expect to be able to be given an online service to manage and indeed provision your service, but likewise you should know the service agent who is in charge of your project. Invariably you will have questions, date slippages, configuration changes and so on and you want that piece of mind that your supplier works with you to change the schedule and meet your demands. Do watch out for this because once you lose track of what you and they are doing it becomes an absolute muddle of spaghetti to unravel.

Other simple things to look out for are the speed and simplicity of the supplier process. Automation of process invariably means that line orders are placed quickly, but you need to understand their acknowledgment process and update process so that you are comfortable with what information you expect to be fed to you over the order lifetime. Likewise you need to actually understand how the installation takes place. It should be a speedy delivery of a box, a speedy delivery of a connection or connections and a harmonious bringing together of the items to create your managed VPN. If you can’t see that nice clear plan from your supplier then be warned that it all might not be plain sailing.

So don’t panic, but just be conscious of getting stuck in to some of the detail when you are evaluating your supplier. This is absolutely not just about price. It’s about their knowledge of how to create and run a project and it’s about the network they use to provide it. It’s also about how they efficiently supply you and appraise you along the way as well as their ability to persuade you of their business and technological integrity.

It’s a fun thing to be able to make your business better and I also think that your supplier will actually want to be part of that journey too. So do probe and ask questions about some of the issues raised and I’m sure you will find your choice of supplier to be much easier and fairly natural. Like most choices the most appropriate one is fairly obvious once you know which questions to ask.

Managed Communications is a high-performance Managed VPN Service provider - the company does not use the public internet to create VPNs as experience has shown this is where many issues regarding latency and security can occur. In addition to standard VPN services bonding of lines enables higher capacity than other service providers can offer to key VPN sites.

The HTC Touch Available with Free Line Rental

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

The Touch is a really well designed mobile phone and HTC clearly put a lot of effort into designing it. With the Touch HTC have produced a handset which is basic but functional for a entry level handset. The overall design of this mobile handset is not as good as we have come to expect from HTC.

Getting on to the display the mobile handset is equipped with a 2.8 inch screen, which is a good sized display for the money. The display is a TFT touchscreen, 65K colors. The Touch has Polyphonic (40 channels), MP3 ring tones enabled plus a vibrating tone. This mobile phone is bluetooth enabled making it very convenient to integrate with devices, for example hands free sets or even a music system. The HTC Touch is supplied with a Li-Ion 1100 mAh, battery. The HTC Touch has a battery cell life of 200 hrs standby charge and talk time of 5:00. The Touch supports 2G GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 . A 2 MP, 1600×1200 pixels, video is integrated into this phone camera. A WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML (PocketIE), compatible browser is also included allowing mobile Internet access. Colour wise the HTC Touch is available in, Soft Black, Wasabi Green, White and Burgundy. The HTC Touch is compact and lightweight. The HTC Touch weighs in at 112 g, This mobile handset is also equipped with, Voice memo, Java MIDP 2.0, Built-in handsfree, Video/audio album, MP3/AAC player and Pocket Office(Word, Excel, Outlook, PDF viewer).

Despite being a pretty new model, the HTC Touch faces a lot of competition. Because of this it is pretty easy to find a fantastic deal on this phone. The best place by far to buy a mobile phone today is online. Shopping online can save you a lot of money, believe it or not, it is possible to get free line rental deals on the HTC Touch , which will not cost anything to run.

Answering Before Listening

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

“He who answers before listening — that is his folly and his shame” (Proverbs 18:13 NIV); “Before hearing, answer not, and interrupt no one in the middle of his speech” (Sirach 11:8 NAB); “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak…” (James 1:19 NIV).

We interrupt God when we question and shout “Why?” in the midst of His workings for us. Too, in our conduct toward others, we are so anxious to prove to them how wise we are that we can’t wait to mow them down with our own philosophy, right or wrong. We can never learn while we trip over our own tongue trying to prove what we perceive to be another’s ignorance.

In social relations we are too quick to form superficial judgments of others. It’s a very narrow mind and heart that will not allow another to express his or her beliefs and feelings. It is hurtful, hateful and foolish to assume that we have the last word about anything at all. People and life have many fascinating facets that only the open mind and heart will find by observing and listening to others. Most of the time this means being speechless!

“Anyone who teaches novelties and refuses to fall in with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the doctrine that tallies with godliness, is a conceited, ignorant creature, with a morbid passion for controversy and argument which leads only to envy, dissension, insults, insinuations, and constant friction between people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the Truth.” (1 Timothy 6:3,4 Moffatt). How we love to press and impress others, to the point of imposition. Rather than knocking others over with our wit and expertise, we might be better off taking James’ advice and try quiet courtesy.

“Some take a pride in being quick. They answer a matter before they hear it, hear it out, nay, as soon as they but hear of it. They think it is their honour to take up a cause suddenly; and, when they have heard one side, they think the matter so plain that they need not trouble themselves to hear the other; they are already apprized of it, and masters of all the merits of the cause. Whereas, though a ready wit is an agreeable thing to play with, it is solid judgment and sound wisdom that do business. Those that take a pride in being quick commonly fall under the just reproach of being impertinent. It is folly for a man to go about to speak to a thing which he does not understand, or to pass sentence upon a matter which he is not truly and fully informed of, and has not patience to make a strict enquiry into; and, if it be folly, it is and will be shame.” Anonymous.

Humans Can’t Get Bird Flu from Humans: But that Could Change Soon

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Bird flu, or avian flu, is an influenza virus
strain that typically infects birds - including wild birds
like ducks and domestic birds like chickens.

There are many forms of bird flu, and most are relatively
harmless, producing mild symptoms or even no symptoms.
However, several strains of bird flu produce a highly
contagious disease that kills quickly and could lead to a
massive bird flu epidemic. These dangerous viruses are known
as “highly pathogenic avian influenza.”

One such bird flu virus is currently spreading among
chickens in Asian countries. In recent years it was
discovered that the bird flu virus can infect people who
have close contact with live birds.

The current strain cannot be passed from human to human, but
heath officials say it may mutate and become contagious in
our species. If that happens, according to David Nabarro of
the U.N. and World Health Organization, “an epidemic could
kill between 5 and 150 million people,” which would be a
much larger disaster than 2004’s Asian Tsunami and 2005’s
U.S. hurricanes combined.

Symptoms of bird flu (avian flu) in humans include:

Conjunctivitis
Cough
Fever
Muscle aches
Sore throat
(Severe cases) Breathing problem and pneumonia

How dangerous is bird flu?

Bird flu can be fatal.

There have been a number of small outbreaks of bird flu
since 1997, and people who get it appear to have a high
mortality rate.

*1997 Hong Kong - 18 people were infected and 6 people
died.

*There were two cases and one death in Hong Kong in 2003.

*As many as 10 deaths have been linked to an outbreak in a
number of Asian countries last year.

How can bird flu be treated?

Anyone with bird flu symptoms should see a health care
professional immediately. The bird flu virus currently
infecting birds in Asia that has caused human illness and
death appears to be resistant to Tamiflu, according to
officials at Queen Mary Hospital in Australia. Tamiflu is
the most common drug used to treat flu in humans.

There currently is no vaccine to protect humans against the
strain of bird flu virus that’s been detected in Asia.
However, research studies to test a bird flu vaccine to
protect humans began in April 2005.

avoiding bird flu, can be found at

Celebrities - Most Popular Real People

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

You may be thinking to yourself that we’re all real people. Well, yes. But this little review is going to focus on the real people who don’t normally become celebrities. These aren’t the movie stars or recording stars. These are just the everyday folks who go to the supermarket to buy food for their family or go to school or are even unemployed. If you’re wondering how these people can become celebrities, you can thank the reality television craze for that.

Yes, reality TV. It is the biggest thing on television since, well, since real TV. You have to give the first person credit who thought even for a moment that anybody would spend a half hour or an hour of their time sitting in front of their television watching a bunch of nobodies doing just about anything and everything, from singing to eating bugs. Most of these people have drifted into obscurity but there have been a few who have become very popular and there names will always be known to millions of people around the world.

One of these such people is a gentleman by the name of Richard Hatch. In case you have been living in a cave and don’t recognize the name, which is doubtful, Hatch was the original survivor of the show by that name. He has since gone on to tour the world as a spokesperson and motivational speaker. Ever hear of a show called “Entertainment Tonight?” Of course you have. Well, Hatch has worked as a correspondent for that show. He did this for the “Early Show” as well and if that isn’t enough, he appeared as a guest star on the hit comedy “Becker”. He still runs his own business as a corporate trainer and a consultant, but he is probably one of the most popular real people celebrities that ever was and will ever be.

But don’t think the reality craze ends with Richard Hatch because it doesn’t. During the 2004 season of American Idol two singers went into the final round as the two most popular finalists in American Idol history. Their names were Ruben Stoddard and Clay Aiken. Going into the last week it was a toss up as to who was going to actually be the next American Idol. Eventually Stoddard was named the next American Idol. And while he did achieve a level of popularity, he never did match the popularity of clean cut boy Aiken who went on to guest at many events including parades and ultimately at Dick Clark’s “Rockin’ New Year’s Eve”. Aiken has since become an ambassador to UNICEF and has pretty much dropped out of the show biz arena. But during his time as an American Idol runner up, nobody was more popular than Clay Aiken.

These are just a couple of the many “stars” who have come about because of reality television. As of this writing another American Idol winner is just a week away. Will this person become the next Richard Hatch or Clay Aiken? Or will the runner up become the more popular? Or will they both just drift into obscurity?

Only time will tell.

Earth Core Spin Cycle for Geo Thermal Launching of Rockets into Space

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

We know that the Earth is not completely round, by observing the terrain and measuring the circumference at the equator and from pole to pole. We know that the moon is not round and we can be pretty certain that the Earth’s core is not round. Scientists have determined that the core is moving around faster than the Earth. Every four hundred years the core makes an additional revolution to the Earth’s number of revolutions. Since the core moves faster and is not round and since the cavity in the Earth’s center is most likely not symmetrical, it stands to reason that as the lumps or bumps in the Earth’s core comes around, it will effect the inside cavity as it bumps, causes friction or scrapes the inside of the Earth’s center cavity, which is said to be filled with very hot material due to the friction of the spinning core. These friction areas will have supreme pressure build ups, which can be timed and we can use this information to our advantage.

Now then I propose we map the periods of regional pressure, drill holes and cap them off at a certain depth. Then I propose that we send down capsules we wish to send into space and lower them down the hole. Then open up the hole and use this pressure to blast our cargo into space. Imagine the capsule blasting into space thru the atmosphere using geo-thermal power and why not, it is energy and a heck of a lot more than we can muster and it is there all the time waiting for us. We can use this and time it correctly to shoot down a comet, asteroid, launch to Mars, the Moon or deliver supplies to the ISS or even simply to send satellites into space. Think on this Sci Fi, thought, it could work?
