Spray on Dirt is a great idea indeed to quickly repaint, temporarily vehicles in military convoys. When moving large convoys through the battlefield it is necessary to conceal his best possible your troops movements.

Today with satellites in space and unmanned aerial vehicles in the sky; there are all eyes everywhere. It is therefore very important to conceal your location as long as possible and hopefully see your enemy before they see you and fire upon them before they know what happened.

The idea of spray on dirt therefore makes sense, however many military tactics advisers say that spray on dirt is an expensive process, requires expert training and adds vehicles to the convoy and personnel to do the job. It just does not makes sense to put more than is absolutely needed at risk in the war zone.

Indeed, my thoughts are to KISS, simple equipment, basic application, fast, efficient and on the go. When advancing in the Modern Net-Centric Battlespace, speed is important. If a piece of hardware, one man submarine, Humvee, even a robotic Sandia “Sarge” type unit needs to be concealed then such a quick application system makes sense. Robotic arm could easily do a smaller unit to camouflage its self. Consider all those in 2006.

Driving through old town Pasadena really brings a clear perspective on what a cool downtown should be like. With its trendy bars and friendly restaurants it’s no wonder why there’s a nightlife any day of the week. There’s a place for everyone. Cool hip bars and restaurants to laid back hidden retreats for people who wish to get away from the lime light.

This cool nightlife is what the Inland Empire is lacking. There’s no real place to go to and have a cool dining experience. Simply put, the Inland Empire just sucks. There’s nothing to do here except look at the dirt fly by your face and watch the homeless wander around like zombies in the city streets. Not an idea of a fun nightlife to me.
As old as the Inland Empire is you would think there would be cool areas where developments like old town Pasadena or the Gas Lamp District in San Diego exists, but there isn’t any such thing in the IE.

This may be due to the fact that there isn’t enough space in the Inland Empire. I have to disagree with that notion. With massive plots of dirt and vacant buildings there seems to be plenty of space. I think in the end it’s the area and the people who lived there. The Inland Empire is not known for being wealthy or abundant with trendy rich people. That’s not to say there aren’t wealthy people that live in the IE, they just go out to LA or San Diego on the weekends. If they ever start to build a cool downtown area in the IE, then they should get in contact with this Inland Empire web design company to create a site for them.

Once we have understood how the concept of movable type changed our lives forever, we can then look at what effect it has had on everyone. To start with, we didn’t have to write everything any more for media purposes. Looking at the process in a nutshell, it was a question of applying ink to a surface (type) and an “imprint” of that image was pressed onto a piece of paper. Where do you think the word “press” came from?

I can imagine that entrepreneurs of the day could see what was going to happen commercially, in a similar way to how Bill Gates looked at software for computers. We had a situation where manufacturers - particularly type manufacturers - could offer their clients the opportunity of making their printed word look more attractive to their customers in turn and so increase profits.

Imagine advertisers: before printing technology, they would simply have to write their campaigns in the hope that folk found it attractive and were drawn to the product they were selling - if indeed they wrote anything by hand. Someone else did the “publishing” work, so the same advertiser could run more than one campaign at a time with the knowledge that the advertising would be clear, concise, accurate and most importantly, time effective.

As more mechanical equipment became available, so the type of thing that could be produced became more varied. Two-colour imaging first became the vogue, and the same entrepreneurs snapped it up and used it as a “modern” means of spreading the written word.

Mass production printing, like newspapers, were an obvious means of using the current technology to spread current events to a wider audience and as time went on and more technology became available, so the size of these publications also increased. One of the primary offshoots of the technology was that many people were given employment within the printing industry. What is now known as “pre-press” were called compositors, who prepared the adverts within the pages and indeed the pages themselves for the presses.

There were also stereotypers, who made the huge U-shaped leaden moulds that were clipped to the massive machines and from which the impression was taken and printed onto the newspaper’s pages.

I am not labouring on the newspaper side of the printing industry but it does give a clear indication of how many people were used in its production and how many skilled trades were involved. The “commercial” side of printing was also thriving, producing magazines, as a well as business flyers, invoices, every form of stationery imaginable and in “hot metal” days - these were the days prior to computerised typesetting with Apple Macs and the like - demand often outweighed supply and you could find printers and typesetters on almost every street in every town in every country.

I believe the mechanics of printing, rather than the technology, has made it a viable industry. My reasoning being that anyone nowadays can set up a computer in the back room of a house and start producing a flyer with a very basic word processing programme. However, when that flyer has been “typed” the operator still has to visit a printer to get a good quality finished product.

The Rudder of the Day

It’s been said that the first hour is the rudder of the day. I’ve found this to be very true in my own life. If I’m lazy or haphazard in my actions during the first hour after I wake up, I tend to have a fairly lazy and unfocused day. This kind of day might begin by lingering in bed to cuddle the wife, being pounced by my daughter, stretching a bit, getting dressed, shaving, having a leisurely breakfast (the kind that takes me 20 minutes to prepare and another 20 minutes to eat), unloading the dishwasher, discussing the day’s plans with my wife (we both work at home), etc. Then I might start the workday by checking email, writing a blog entry, and doing a few other minor tasks. By this time I’ve usually been up for several hours, and by that time those early hours have already predisposed me to having an uninspired day. On a scale of 1-10, my overall energy level rarely tops a 7 on this kind of day.

But if I strive to make that first hour optimally productive, the rest of the day tends to follow suit. This day begins by waking up at 5am and physically getting up the instant my alarm goes off no lingering or thinking about sleeping in. I quickly get dressed but skip the shaving. I make a cup of herbal tea (no caffeine) and then go straight to my desk in my home office. No checking email. By 5:10am, I’ve begun work on my #1 project. After 60-90 minutes, I’ll take a break to go shave, acknowledge my family, then make a quick 5-minute breakfast and eat it in my office while I continue working. That productive first hour propels me forward, and by 11am, I’ve usually completed the equivalent of a full day’s work under the previous model. And normally my energy level will be at least an 8 or 9 through the rest of the day.

What surprised me was that the second version, although it seems harder, was actually easier once I got used to it. Getting the most important work done early in the day is energizing, and when you have a few weeks of highly productive days, it adds even more energy and momentum. I feel great when I see the clock hit 8:30am, and I’ve already done 3 solid hours of focused work on my #1 project. This creates strong momentum that carries me through the rest of the day. Many days I don’t bother to check my email until after 5pm in fact, I think if people adopted the simple habit of not checking email until after 5pm (assuming normal business hours), that alone would dramatically increase productivity. Try making email the last activity of your workday, and watch how quickly you can dispatch it.

Of course I have the advantage of working from home, so I can be at my desk within minutes of awakening. But I had similar experiences during those years when I had an office outside the home. I generally found it best to get up and go straight to work with minimal delay. Eating breakfast at the office instead of lingering at home usually led to a more productive day.

The advantage of starting so early is that you finish early. Sometimes I’m done with my workday before I pick up my daughter from preschool at 3:30PM, so I feel no guilt in taking the rest of the day off.

Motivation can precede action, but motivation also follows action. How you spend that first hour will induce the corresponding level of motivation in you, which you can then use to good effect. If you want a highly productive fast-tempo day, make that first hour as such get up and go straight to work on your #1 project. If you want a peaceful day, make that first hour peaceful meditate, read, go for a walk, take a relaxing bath. If you want a lazy day, be lazy that first hour sleep in, watch TV, have a leisurely breakfast. If you want a day lost to trivialities, spend that first hour on trivialities check email, visit online forums, read the news, get chatty with others.

The good news is that if you want to have a certain kind of day, simply focus your best efforts on that first hour. Don’t worry about what comes afterwards. If you nail that first hour, the rest of the day will tend to fall in line. Leverage the power of the rudder to steer the whole ship.

To a lesser degree, I’ve also found this can work midday, although it’s usually harder. If you’ve started off having a lousy day, take a breath and then focus your best efforts on mastering the hour that’s right in front of you. That’s your rudder.

Wind Turbine Generators work good to make electricity especially when the wind is blowing. But what do we do when the wind dies down to only a few miles per hour?
