Should You Specialize in a Given Subject as a Writer – or Not?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Okay, so you are interested in writing something, anything, but don’t know where to begin. For example, you’re not sure whether you should know something about a given subject or not.

According to Bob Bly, you should specialize after you’ve had some things published and gained some recognition as a writer. This is probably excellent advice if you are interested in a few things and are unable to decide which of those things you should write about. Doing this is a great idea, in my opinion, if you just want to get an article written and ready for publication. Your enthusiasm enables you to move forward and sets a pace. You are so busy writing about some aspect of a given subject that you don’t even feel tempted to procrastinate, which is always a good thing. And who knows, that piece’s chances of getting into print will be pretty good. Once it’s been published, you will likely feel motivated to write on a more regular basis.

On the other hand, you may have had specialized training in medicine or accounting or teaching or whatever and have no problem engaging in shop talk with colleagues, friends and family. You are very much aware of problems in the field and have had some experience with them. For these reasons, you should consider writing articles about some aspect of your field, such as its problems, and getting that article published in a related professional journal or magazine. As in the first case, you are thoroughly familiar about your subject and are not likely to procrastinate. And as in the first case, you will feel motivated to continue writing on a more regular basis. In fact, writing will become a bit easier, and you will not have to struggle with beginning paragraphs and the like.

Doing this has worked well for me. An elementary teacher, I was familiar with problems in my field and developed a few solutions for them. Then I packaged these solutions into various articles and was subsequently published in Instructor magazine, where I later accepted a freelance position as contributing editor. Two or three years later, I combined a few articles, expanded their content into a how-to book for elementary teachers called, Teaching Ideas for the Come-Alive Classroom (Parker Pub. Co./Prentice-Hall).

Ultimately, you have a few decisions to make. For example, do you think that you need more direction and structure? Then consider the first option by choosing something that really interests you, asking yourself who your target audience would be, and what it would like to know.

On the other hand, if you already have some training in a trade or profession, you know a lot about it and should consider sharing your insights with colleagues, then a general audience.

Whatever you decide to do, just know that you aren’t “stuck” in a given subject or field, but are free to build on it, or choose a different field to write about. In the meantime, you will have gained valuable experience and contacts. Good luck in your efforts and thank you for reading.

A published author, Dorothy Zjawin will be happy to answer your questions! Her website, http://www.profitable-pen.com, includes practical articles on writing and developing ideas from journals. Her other writing credits include 30 published Instructor articles and a book, Teaching Ideas for the Come-Alive Classroom (Parker Pub. Co./Prentice-Hall).

Article Writing and Article Marketing: What Do They Want to Read?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Wal-Mart, McDonalds, and other large corporations spend millions of dollars doing market research, trying to discover what it is that their customers want.

We can take a hint from what they do.

Don’t assume you know

The mistake many authors and other private practice professionals make is assuming the we know what the public wants, creating something we think they want, and then wondering why it does not sell.

I’m seen many writers create books or e-books that they are in love with, only to find they are they only one that wants it.

So what do I write about?

What I am talking about is doing your “market research.” In our 90 Day Practice Building Intensive at BuildingYourIdealPractice.com we consider market research so important that we spend a full two weeks on it.

There are many ways to do market research. When you post articles to EzineArticles.com and other article directories, there is a simple, free and powerful way to do market research that is often over looked.

All you have to do is check out the number of article views that an article receives. The more articles you have posted the better this research is, because readers have more and more articles from which to choose.

When you see certain articles getting a higher number of views, you know that these are articles people want to read.

Then you write more of them.

For example, if this article is accepted, I’ll have 627 articles posted on EzineArticles.com as of this writing. Many of those articles have been viewed hundreds of times. The one that has been viewed the most, “Relationship Advice: 10 Warning Signs of an Emotional Affair” has been viewed 4,987 times. The next highest has been viewed 880.

Do you think I might write some more articles about emotional affairs?

You betcha!

Zimmer Durom Cup Device Recall Is Miserable News

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Alot of individuals who had durom cups applied in their hip replacement operations are witnessing that there are difficulties that far surpass the natural expectations for recovery. These individuals are experiencing a lot of supplemental pain for lengthier periods of time, needing a revision surgical operations and enlarged medical expenses, and losing revenue by being unable to work at their normal occupations. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is demanding that that their hip cup implant is in no way faulty and say it is not their fault for the faulty surgical procedures, numerous poor people are filing cases against them and obtaining settlements.

In the month of October, 2008 Zimmer declared that it had set aside $47.5 million to compensate for lawsuits filed against them. Many MD’s aren’t so sure that the implant is good to go and without problems. In Point Of Fact, when Zimmer extended online education to physicians in order to instruct them what they said were more precise methods for performing the implant operation, roughly 1/2 of the doctors declined to take part. Thus, the entire situation continues to be irritating for all parties involved, but none more than the hundreds of implant recipients who are needing a revision surgical operation due to the issues with their implant coming loose in the socket.

These hurting individuals definitely merit some help and restitution which obviously is why product liability lawyers are encouraging them to start the lawsuit process. lawrence dorr has been settling up with these claims. Even So, even if the settlement they are being offered by all standards seems reasonable, in most cases patients are resolving too fast and with no provision or allowance put in place for repeat problems if pain returns. If they don’t hold off and wait, to find out what cases are actually going to be worth, people might find themselves ending up paying alot more money out of pocket when further complications arise.

Anyone who realizes they do have a claim against Zimmer may consider looking into it. If you think you may qualify, you should probably visit a lawyer to find out for sure. Look for one that operates nationally and focuses on processing litigation against irregular medical devices. This law firm has taken out all the risks and has setup a special section to research and take care of the claims against Zimmer and secure equitable settlements for their customers.

If your orthopedic Dr. updates you with bad news that you will definitely have to undergo a revision surgical operation to repair your Zimmer Durom hip replacement device, contact an attorney right now.

Story Structure: Empire Strikes Back (1980) Deconstructed

Monday, March 30th, 2009

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon – understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

The Hero’s Journey:

Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.

The Hero’s Journey is also a study of repeating patterns in successful stories and screenplays. It is compelling that screenwriters have a higher probability of producing quality work when they mirror the recurring patterns found in successful screenplays.

Hero’s Journey: Empire Strikes Back deconstructed

Challenge, Inform or Get Off The Stage – Presentation Skills and Powerful Public Speakers

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

“There are two types of speakers; those that are nervous and those that are liars.” Mark Twain

Most of us put public speaking at the top of our list of things to avoid. Then along comes that promotion or new opportunity, and with it, new responsibilities. Among them: communicating, powerfully and effectively in public. Before you rush to get out of that responsibility, consider what it can do for you.

This one ability–communicating ideas powerfully and effectively–can impact professional success more quickly and more absolutely than nearly any other. Become an effective communicator, and you will solidify a reputation as an effective leader. Yet many otherwise accomplished executives never learn to communicate well and take pains to avoid having to speak in public at all.

That’s a lot of wasted opportunity. You can’t expect your ideas to be considered or followed, much less admired, if they’re not communicated well.

Speaking to a group, even a small group that knows you, can be an intimidating. No one has yet died in the effort. We can all get past our fear of public speaking with practice. The important thing is to understand the power you have, that we all have, to communicate effectively. Here are some tips for powerful public speaking:

–Don’t hide behind charts, graphs and power point slides. Despite the cliche, facts don’t speak for themselves. Materials can only support your communication, not substitute for it.

–Accept the “public” part of public speaking. Speeches and presentations delivered before an audience really are about you and your ability to connect. If you’re bored, your audience will be as well. Find the passion in your work and build your presentation or speech around it.

–Put real effort into the question and answer period following your speech or presentation. For many in the audience, it’s their chance to connect with you and you to them.

–Make sure your public speech or presentation isn’t simply a recitation of the facts. Your audience could get that from you in an email. What any audience wants is your perspective. Always provide a context for the data or information you provide.

–Never go long. Any performer knows it’s best to leave them wanting more. Make sure you have something your audience can take home with them to think about.

–Don’t forget to speak ABOUT something. Your main points should be clearly stated and they’ll be back. Before long, you’ll be wondering how you ever considered public speaking something to avoid!

Above all, practice, practice, practice. Don’t run from public speaking opportunities–embrace them–and the power they have to promote your professional success.

Betting: Betting Saloon Taking Chances

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Assuming you haven’t yet learned about gambling saloon card-playing, make sure to peruse the following. A definition of a betting house is a construction that accomodates gambling. Clients will be encouraged to test their luck going for one armed bandits or trying out different pastimes of luck. Betting establishment games for the most part have 100% determined likelihoods informing them which promise the saloon retains a leverage above the patrons.

A large amount of gaming establishment games can sway you into getting dependent swiftly. Take the time-honored slotmachine, a coin operated appliance with three, sometimes more reels which circumvolve once a handle hitched to it is operated. The contraption in the main renders in correlation to a distribution of images perceptible on the panel of the appliance. Sadly, betting hall pastimes present the appearance of having the upper hand, thereby deluding the customer — the victim is presented judgments, but in actual fact these won’t nix the patron’s longterm negative odds. This is due to the betting establishment never paying out the full stake as hoped for. This strategy is continuously seen at work in famous casino games like straight poker, dice games, roulette or blackjack.

Seven card stud is undoubtedly an immensely trendy casino game. The gamblers, holding partially obscured hands, are placing bets into a pot in the center which is then awarded to the last player blessed with the leading set of cards. (Obviously, the bluffing hand may well prevail ..) Commensurate with seven-card stud, blackjack too is an incredibly popular casino pastime. Plenty of its is grounded in the mix of luck and cleverness and decision making, and a practise called “card counting”. It is a highly demanding strategy in which gaming aficionados are in a position to significantly shift the odds of the card game to their personal profit both by betting & systematic opetations according to the cards deployed.

Craps is yet another well-known wagering game using the roll of dice. Visitors must wager their money on the outcome of of 1 roll, or on a succession of rolls of two dice. In contrast to blackjack, there’s no feasible winning system players can exercise to improve the odds. Roulette is an eminently popular casino based game of chance: here, a croupier revolves a roulette wheel which has thirtyseven (European roulette) or thirty eight (American roulette) separately tagged divisions in which a ball will come to a stop, which marks the winner and the connected odds. Whenever a gamer wagers on a particular number which wins, which is to say they’ve got a lucky hand, the payout is thirty-five to 1, the original wager will be repaid. So in totality the original wager is multiplied by a factor of 36.

Do your best to be very cautious as well because all of these casino betting games may well be extremely dependency building. Too many lives have probably been wrecked by gambling & notwithstanding that it indisputably can be entertaining, do strive to govern yourself.

Be in the Trade Publications Your Customers Read

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Your publicity dreams may include being featured in Forbes, Fortune, Time, Inc., and other magazines read by millions. Appearing in those publications can boost both your ego and your business.

A feature in Nailpro may not have the same cachet, but if your clients are nail salons, you should be there. Trade magazines and newsletters give you exposure where it countswith your potential customers.

You may already know of some publications in your industry, but you can learn more about them and discover new ones in media directories at your library. Standard Rate and Data Service publishes information about magazines’ demographics, circulation, ad rates, etc. Writer’s Market, Gale Directory of Publications and others will provide lots of leads.

Remember that you are not necessarily interested in publications that are read by you and your competitors, you are looking for those read by your potential customers. Another way to locate magazines and newsletters of interest to your target market is to ask your current clients which ones they value.

When you find information about a publication with which you are unfamiliar, request sample copies and writer’s guidelines. Then, study them to see how you might be able to fit into their editorial needs and provide information of use to their readers.

Send press releases to announce news. Do you have a new product their readers need to know about? Do you know something that can help them be more successful? You may get a blurb or a story out of it.

Offer your products for review. Books, tools, technology and other products are reviewed in many trade publications.

Write articles for publication. You may get paid for the articles but, whether free or fee, you should insist on a byline that identifies you and your company and includes contact information, such as a phone number or web site URL. Reprints of these articles can also be used in your media kit and in proposals, or simply mailed to clients and potential clients.

Send a letter introducing yourself and describing your background and areas of expertise. Let them know you are available for interview when they need information about the topics on which you are an expert. They may run a profile of you, or contact you for a quote within an article. If they have a feature where readers submit questions to be answered by experts, offer yourself as one of the experts.

Suggest a column. You may be able to land a monthly column by sending a few (three to six) sample columns to the editor, along with a description of your vision for the column.

Look for other opportunities to get your information published. Does the magazine run case studies? Maybe your company can be featured, or you can share a client’s story (with the client’s permission, of course). Do they run contests or polls asking readers to comment on an issue or problem? Respond. Write letters to the editor. Consider the publication’s current features and see how you can fit in and benefit their readers.

Primer on Algebra

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

It is safe to say that algebra is the center of mathematics. An in depth knowledge of algebra and its basics is required before you could work on other mathematical problems. Deriving the answer for the product of 223 and 112 is quite easy if you use a calculating machine. However, in a case where you need to work around the exponential of 223 and logarithm of 112, you will certainly need an algebraic problem solver. Graphing a circle will be easy for this given formula X2 + Y2 = 4 but when it comes for an inequality like (X-2)2 + (Y-4)2 > 20 then it will be quite harder to plot the graph. In this situation algebra application can help you immensely because once you enter the inequality in the program, the graph will get drawn automatically within a fraction of second. These packages can easily resolve any kind of algebraic, arithmetical and radical expressions of any kind of complexity.

Domain and Range of a Function

Although, deriving the domain and range of a function such as Y = X2 can be easily found by considering the number range on the X-Y plane, defining the domain and range of a log(tan 2x + sin 3x) = cosine(-4)(2x) will be very difficult. But thanks to algebra calculating systems, you can now solve these complex sums in very little time while being able to comprehend every step of the way that it takes you to successfully resolve the mathematical question.

Coordinate Geometry

Now you can easily find the focus and directrix and whether parabola opens up or down by just feeding the equation into algebra software system. Addition, subtraction and multiplication of binomials are quite uninteresting, since they involve lots of terms to manipulate. But algebra calculator will do this job in much less time and with 100% accuracy. Similarly, algebra calculators can save the trouble for you in calculating matrices of 33 or 44 order or its reverse matrices.

So, with the introduction of algebra software, the times where you dreaded the sight of indices, fractions or radical equations, comes to an end. If you could not stand geometry, you may even start liking it now thanks to the computerized algebra systems that will automatically graph everything you ever need.
