Doctoral Tams

Part of the graduation attire for those with doctorates includes wearing of the tam instead of the usual caps. The tam is normally worn during the graduation ceremony by faculty members who hold doctorate degrees. The doctoral tams enable the faculty members and professors to make a distinction between themselves and the graduates. The most preferred material for making the tams is velvet, although one can choose any type of tam they want. The doctoral tams , which are made of velvet, are normally black in color. This is because most of the gowns are black and the black tam makes a perfect match. One can choose any color that matches their gowns.

The number of sides the tam can have is normally four, six and eight. The number of sides the tam has does not depend on the university but depends on the person. To complete the look, the doctoral tams are worn with a tassel attached to them. Those with doctorates prefer using silky tassels or metallic ones. There are others who prefer using gold bullion tassels. One should be certain of the type of tassel to be attached to the tam, because once attached they cannot be removed.

Games of Chance Betting Fans Contend in: All about Betting Hall Betting

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

So maybe you have not caught on to betting establishment wagering, do read on —

To clarify terms, a betting establishment is a structure that accomodates betting. Patrons will take chances handling one-armed-bandits or plenty of other games of chance. Betting room games as a rule have mathematically derived odds incorporated which make sure the saloon keeps possession of its above the clientele.

Far too many casino games can instigate you to get overly habituated very speedily. E.g. there’s the vintage slot machine, a cash operated machine with 3+ reels which swivel if an arm on the side is operated. The gadget typically remunerates based on a series of motifs observable on the panel of the contraption. Unfortunately, gaming room games tend to convey the illusion of mental power, effectively deluding the betting enthusiast — the addressee is presented with judgments, but these can not level the client’s long-term disadvantage. This is due to the betting hall not repaying the full sum as hoped for. This structure will persistently be seen at work in famous casino games such as seven-card stud poker, craps, roulette or blackjack.

Five card stud is certainly a highly popular casino game. The gamesters, playing with concealed hands, wager in the pot which is ultimately given to the winning participant carrying the winning set of cards. (Obviously, the bluffing hand may well prevail)

casino game

Not far removed from Texas hold’em, blackjack too is an immensely fashionable casino pastime. A sizeable chunk of its notoriety is owed to the mix of luck and savvy and choice making, as well as a routine tagged “card counting”. The aforementioned is a complex strategy by which gambling aficionados can force the chances of the game in their favor by both betting and procedural opetations in correlation to the cards dealt.

“Craps” is another extremely popular pastime involving the throw of a couple of dice. Clients can make bets on the result of one roll, or on a string of spins of two dice. In contrast to blackjack, there just isn’t any credible killer tactics punters could employ to improve the odds.

Roulette is another prominent casino based pastime; here, a croupier will twist a roulette wheel that incorporates precisely thirtyseven (as in European roulette) or thirtyeight (American roulette) uniquely marked slots in which a white pellet will eventually settle, revealing the final winning number and the other chances that will always come with it. When the punter has put money on a particular number and makes it big i.e. they are indeed lucky, the guaranteed dividend is going to be 35 to 1, the wager itself will be given back. So in totality it is multiplied by a factor of 36.

Public Speaking or Gargle with Drano? 4 Ways To Prepare…

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Which sounds more appealing, getting up in front of a group of strangers and talking, while they all sit there looking at you like a dog watching a ceiling fan…or gargling with Drano? It’s no surprise how many would choose the Drano.

Public Speaking has been ranked as the “number one fear” among thousands of us. The anxiety is overwhelming, you start to sweat profusely, your knees are knocking so hard you might break a kneecap, hands tremble like you dipped them in a fryer full of hot oil, voice starts quivering like someone dumped a bucket of ice water on your head and you can’t remember what it is you are supposed to be talking about. Why? Because you are scared to death.

I want to share with you some tips on overcoming this fear of Public Speaking.

1. Picture yourself doing it, go ahead picture yourself standing in front of all these people saying what it is you are going to be talking about. Picture yourself from start to finish. Begin with walking up to the microphone or podium, all the way thru your speech, and then finally wrapping it up to a successful outcome.

2. Practice, practice, practice…do your speech ‘out loud’ over and over again. Now, do the same thing to a real live person..(just make sure they will be honest with you about your presentation). It’s been said: “Repetition is the mother of all skill”…it really is and you do it everyday in your real life, because you have done the same thing over and over again. You can just about overcome any fear you have by doing it over and over again. Sports are a good example…you see NBA players almost never miss a free throw, PGA players make 20 foot putts, NFL kickers put it thru the uprights. It’s not because they were born with some special skill…it’s because they practiced and practiced and practiced some more. The same holds true for Public Speaking.

3. Whip out the camcorder and tape yourself giving your speech. That way you will be able to see what the audience will be watching and listening to.

4. Get a grip…just before you give your speech, RELAX. Take some slow deep breaths and remind yourself that all these people are here to listen to what you have to say. They don’t know (or really care) what your personal life is like. Honestly, they could care less about anything going on in your personal life that YOU feel is adding to this anxiety.

The more prepared you are, the less anxiety you’ll experience, which in turn, will boost your confidence sky high. Then after you are all “said and done”…you will never look at a can of drano the same way again.

HSE Urges Directors to Be More Committed to Health and Safety

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Chairperson of the HSE , Judith Hackitt has urged the Directors to prove their leadership qualities by displaying personal commitment and taking greater interest in finding and resolving health and safety related issues faced by their staff.

Ms Hackitt asserted that this is possible only if the Directors bring about a big change in the daily schedules and cut down the hours they spend on attending boardroom meetings. Ms Hackitt also said that currently the idea of “do as I say” is in place in most of the companies, however, a much better approach would be to put a practice of “do as I do” in place. This will show the employees how seriously the company’s leadership takes the cause of health and safety.

Ms Hackitt suggested that directors need to spend more time on work sites, interacting with the staff. This will not only assist them in getting to learn what health and safety problems are being faced by their employees but will also increase their personal credibility.

She added that often the integrity of the directors is questioned because of the difference seen in their words and action. To boost employees’ morale and win their confidence it is essential for the directors to show a greater interest in health and safety, and the Chartered Secretaries and Administrators can advocate the board on these matters.

Directors should ensure their staff are well trained to help maintain their company’s health and safety culture. Fire safety training as provided by Workplace Law is a good first step to ensuring health and safety compliance.

Writing Tips – Protecting Your Material

Monday, April 27th, 2009

If you’re a writer or planning to do any writing for the purpose of getting your work published, you’re going to want to protect yourself from getting your material stolen. We live in a cutthroat business and publishers and agents will take any opportunity they can to steal an up and coming writer’s work. So what can you do to make sure that something like this doesn’t happen?

What you do all depends on what you’ve written as there are different laws for different areas of the writing professions. So since you are dealing with laws, the first thing you’re going to want to do is consult with an entertainment attorney. This is a lawyer who specializes in this area. This is where you have to decide whether or not you want to make a trade off. To get a really good and experienced attorney in entertainment and copyright law, you’re going to have to spend some big bucks. If you’re an up and coming writer, you may not have that much money and won’t be able to afford his services. You may have to settle for someone who doesn’t have as much experience. The trade off here is that someone with less experience is likely to miss something that a more experienced attorney is going to catch. The more complicated the contract, the easier it is for things to slip through the cracks. This is where you have to decide what is more important to you, saving a few bucks or getting the best representation possible.

While you’re looking for and getting an attorney you’re going to want to copyright your work. The copyright laws have changed dramatically over the years to make it easier for artists to get their material copyrighted. If you’re a songwriter you have two avenues to choose from. You can send your material with a small fee to the copyright office in Washington to get your song copyrighted, or you can simply mail a copy of the song either on tape, CD or sheet music to yourself and leave it unopened with the post mark clearly visible. The advantage of sending to Washington is that if a court battle ensues the evidence will probably hold more weight with a judge when rendering his decision. Other areas of writing have their own laws and procedures but they are all very similar to song writing.

One thing you should always do when dealing with a publisher who is interested in your work is to get everything in writing. Verbal contracts can stand up in a court of law but they are harder to win against than a written one. When you do get a contract, make sure you go over every page of it. If there is something you don’t understand, have your lawyer go over it.

One thing you should never do as a writer is sell your work outright. This is something that only a crooked publisher would ask you to do anyway. You could be selling away millions of dollars in royalties if your published work, which is now owned 100% by the publisher, takes off and is a big seller.

By simply following the above tips you’ll be protecting yourself against the possibility of losing a lifetime of earnings.

When was the last time you picked up a pen and wrote a letter in long
hand? Grainy, silky or just plain vanilla, I miss the feel of personal
correspondence. In looking through some old photographs and family
memorabilia, I came across a poem my mother sent me when I was
working overseas. While holding the yellowed paper in my hands, I had
an overwhelming sense of her presence. I wasn’t simply reading her
words; I was hearing her voice.

Our family lived near the ocean and as a child I loved wandering off the
beach and meandering along the boardwalk. On the back of a faded
photo of a beach outing, my father had written in his unique calligraphic
style, “We removed 13 splinters from Suzy’s feet.” I immediately relived
being carried off in my father’s arms to the first aid station where I
ate enough Tootsie Rolls between wailings to overshadow any negative
aspects of the foot surgery. And I remembered what a terrific swimmer
he was.

I still have my older brother Bobby’s letter sent while he was waiting to
be shipped out from Okinawa to Japan during World War II. The enemy
was unyielding, the invasion force was huge and not many GIs were
expected to survive the first wave on to the beaches. But true to his
nature Bobby didn’t want us to worry. His letter was upbeat with funny
doodles. By the time we received the letter the U.S. had dropped atomic
bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki signaling the end of the war. My
brother went to Japan as an occupier, not an invader, and he lived to tell
his story. These intimate moments are the stuff of life that connect us to
each other; they give us a real sense of our own history. For our Iraq and
Afghanistan GI’s, email is a blessing, but without the smell of the
stationery.

Today we live in a no touch world. Send an electronic greeting card or
an email, instant message a friend with all those blah, blah acronyms
on to the next multi-task. We’re too busy for personal notes. It’s so much
easier to be personally disconnected, while remaining impersonally
connected to a faceless impersonal world. Not only has writing by hand
passed into history, sadly there is a definite disconnect between
humans in all areas of life. We complain about the rudeness in our
society, but it is precisely this disconnectnot having to look someone
in the eye or confront them on the phonewhich encourages the
rudeness. Never having to say I’m sorry is b-s. It lets us off the hook of
responsibility for our actions. We’re too busy to be civil; we’re on to the
next multitask.

Speaking of multi-tasking, I saw a commercially successful young
couple on television reveling in the fact that they each work 80 to 100
hours a week. They are so in love with their jobs they never take a
vacation; they’re never without their cell phones and Blackberries. On
trains, planes and automobiles, how many folks do you see that
are not electronically tethered or otherwise digitally occupied? Ask them
what color the flowers are and they cannot tell you.

Consider what humans would look like millennia from now if hearing
and seeing were the only senses that developed. We could “evolve” like
the subject of a science fiction story I read as a child. Absent arms and
legs, the protagonist was an enormous brain with tiny holes for ears and
eyes. That’s a bit of a stretch, but you get my drift. It’s easier to plug in
and zone out rather than deal with the demands of 21st century life.

Technology frees us to sit back and let someone else, or
something else, do what our arms, legs and brains are naturally
programmed to do. Unfortunately, while we are enjoying the remarkable
attributes technology brings into our lives, we are being blindsided by
the scum of society that use technology to lie, cheat, scam or lure our
kids into places we don’t want them to gofor example, pornography. In
an interview with serial killer Ted Bundy just before his execution he
stated that unless society deals with pornography, “lots of kids…are
going to be dead tomorrow.” Bundy told his interviewer that every killer
he knew through the prison grapevine had been influenced in childhood
by pornography. What a chilling thought.

Technology is moving faster than we can imagine. We can only hope
the decades to come will bring more planet friendly ways of living with
each other and our trains, planes and automobiles. Plugging in needn’t
mean zoning out. It’s our responsibility, our duty to be aware, be very
aware
of what is happening around us. The more aware we are the
more apt we are to get the government we need and the quality of life
we deserve.

2 Keys to Starting the Writing Process

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Starting is the most difficult place to be when you have the desire to write anything. You have probably heard the term “writer’s block” and it hits us all. Most often it is just a matter of settling down with the right mindset to get going. Sometimes it is beyond just settling in. Everything seems to distract you, the bustle of the workplace, family at home, the desire to go out and be in the fresh air, a book you really want to read, plus a host of all kinds of interruptions.

These interruptions need to be minimized, if possible. Find a place to put on the headphones or be in a quieter than normal environment to get started. Most likely it will mean going into work earlier than normal and snatching 30 minutes or more before the rest of the office arrives. Even one half hour will get you well on your way to being a productive writer.

For myself, I get up very early and head for my computer before the family is awake. I manage to write for an hour everyday before I get into the daily routine. Writing, however, does not always flow the way we need it to. Some days are more difficult than others. Thankfully there are ways to get the creative juices flowing.

If you are worried about the creative part, just remember that creativity is part of being a human and everyone can tap into it, if given the right circumstances.

To get the creative juices flowing, you should do some warm-up exercises. Not the jumping jack variety but ones that nimble the fingers and brain. Here are some simple warm-ups that will take under five minutes to complete.

Step one: Think of a problem that you need to resolve at work.

Step two: Write three words that describe the problem

Step three: Using the three words, and timing yourself for five minutes, write a flow of words that describe the problem in detail. Do not correct typing errors (you can do this by writing by hand as well), just keep writing until the three minutes are up.

By warming-up in this way, you are focusing on the subject and the three descriptors. Since you are familiar with the subject matter, the words start to flow. When you go back and read your work, you will be amazed at how well you did. Just remember, this is a first draft and you should never consider a flow the final work. Send it to an editor to put it in final proof format.

If you feel you are not warmed up enough after five minutes, go back and do another set but this time pick a subject at random with three descriptors and see how well you do. This only takes five minutes and you can write a page about anything within that time frame.

Now that you are all warmed-up, you are ready to start writing your pages

The Lotto! Is Playing a Waste of Time? The Odds of Succeeding on the Euromillions and Does Any Player Stand a Real Chance of Winning the Jackpot

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

The probability of scooping up the European Lottery jackpot is a far-off one : seventy-six million but the probability of winning a money prize is a fairly decent one : twenty-four. When the jackpot is not won on a given lotto draw, it is brought forward to the following lotto draw which results in an ever increasing jack-pot value. New rules brought in on the 9/02/2007 specify the number of successive roll overs to eleven, with the jackpot rolling out to lower prize levels succeeding the 11th draw if the prize is not collected.

The Euro millions lottery or the Euro Lottery, as it is usually recognized, pools the lotto ticket revenues of the 9 partaking Euro countries showing a huge Euro Lottery jack-pot. With the quantity of countries joining the EU on the increase, that will without a doubt lead to even more states participating in the Euro lotto. A growth in the amount of individuals partaking in the Euro Lotto will lead to a continuing increase of the already whopping Euro Lottery jackpots.

The recent regulations also initiated Euro Lottery Super Draw which come about twice yearly plus they offer jack-pots in the region of 100 million pounds. The difference with Super-Draws is that the jack-pot must be won during the week of the draw; this means, if there is no lotto ticket matching, all the drawn numbers then the top prize will then be allotted to the ticket bearer(s) on the succeeding winning prize tier.

Every participant has to choose 5 main numbers from one to fifty plus 2 Lucky Star numbers from 1 to 9. During the EUROMILLIONS draw 5 main and two lucky star numbers are then chosen at random from two draw machines containing numbered lotto balls.

Who Needs Algebra?

What Does It Mean By Algebra?

Maths has long been one of the most dreaded subjects in American schools. While in other nations graduate children excel in mathematics, most of the common high school age pupils in the United States scratch their heads when presented with questions about converting fractions to decimals, converting measures and units, solving radical inequalities, or solving radical equations. This situation is distributed across the United States. Algebra consists of different complicated mathematical equations that it is easy for a pupil to get lost when asked to explain synthetic division or adding fractions . For that matter, letters are heavily used for substituting the numbers when it comes to algebra. While this isn’t highly complicated in and of itself, it brings itself poorly to the ‘jump in and play’ view of some math. Simply speaking, if a individual is supposed to perform a particular algebraic task, he or she should be aware of the algebraic tasks that led to it. This is to say that Algebra is a procedure that asks mastery of every step in order to advance. A pupil can’t hope for finding square root radicals and roots when he or she has not mastered proportions and ratios, or converting measures and units.

Technological Breakthroughs:

While this is not a recent development, it looks that mathematics grades have dropped off even further in recent years. The blame can be ascribed to many parties, but no solution comes out of finger pointing. Recently, there have been extracurricular helps on the market to assist students enhance mathematical skills when out of the classroom. What little computer software or program there was, more geared towards aiding younger children grasp the constructs of arithmetic. Fortunately, the market for such a product has coincided with the technology necessary, allowing an inflow of ‘algebra computer software‘ or ‘algebra solver‘ programs that let the mastery of algebra to anybody with a computer and a mouse.

Algebra Solvers:

These algebra calculators vary depending on the brand and the program. Some may provide such features as graphing a circle, or solving simultaneous equations, but may not have the programming essential for resolving exponential equations or adding exponents . The users are suggested to evaluate these algebra software package upon purchase, although virtually all the software programs advertise their features. The best bet for anybody who is interested in computer help for subtracting rational expressions or converting decimals to fractions; fundamentally, whatever particular need you would have, is to search on the Web for the product which the user is interested in purchasing.
