This Aint Golf! It’s Cricket!

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Go on, admit it, you have never read an article on cricket before, right? But wait, this aint no ordinary cricket, this is the Ashes! The Ashes? Yes, the series between England and Australia that dates back to the 1870’s. The two old foes locked in combat in England throughout the summer.

Australia, world number one, world champions, such a wonderful side that have lauded it over world cricket since the demise of the great West Indian team ten years ago. But England too, and it is England, not Great Britain, have been on the rise. They have defeated all of their main rivals, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the West Indies, and only the mighty Australia now stand in their way at the summit of world cricket.

Some say that Test cricket (that’s the 5 day variety, I kid you not, and even then the match could be a draw) is a dying sport, some say it has no future, some say the kids of today don’t have the patience to watch a match for five days. It is doomed. Well, as that American general so eloquently replied to the Wehrmacht when surrounded at Bastogne, “Nuts!”

This is the biggest sporting event to hit Britain this summer, bar none. When the Ashes series commenced in London last Thursday at the Lords cricket ground, 30,000 salivating followers were crammed inside. Estimates say that they could have filled the ground six times over. I have little doubt that is true. Not a sign of a dying sport there then. And what is wrong with playing a titanic struggle for five days anyhow? Golf plays for four days, and can spill over into a fifth, if there is a tie or bad weather.

On a dull morning Australia win the toss and elect to bat, a brave decision in view of the overcast skies that could enable the English quick bowlers to swing the ball through the air. Should make batting tricky.

Cricket is a simple game. Two teams of eleven. They each bat twice. Add the runs together from each innings and the team with the most, wins. Easy. Five Test matches, five days each. Australia bat, and England strike! Australia are skittled out for a measly 190. A poor score. Optimism is high. England for heaven’s sake have gone favourites in the betting tents, and that hasn’t been seen since betting on this series began over a year ago. What is happening?

The pundits crawl from their shells. Of course they always knew that England were on the up, (oh if only they were), and that Australia were in decline, so they say, now. We all knew that Australia’s two leading bowlers Shane Warne (most test wickets in history) and Glen McGrath, one away from his 500th wicket, were both 35 years of age and drawing towards the end of their illustrious careers, surely. The age doesn’t seem to have harmed Shane’s bedroom activities, he’s known as the busty blonde for his physique and dyed hair, and there is a constant diatribe of his extra curricula activities reported in the tabloid press, both in England and Australia. It doesn’t seem to distract him too much on the field.

So England go in to bat. Calamity. Glen McGrath refuses to believe the tripe written in the papers. He rapidly sends back five of the best English batsmen to the packed and stunned pavilion, for just four runs conceded. England rally, but too little, too late, they are bowled out for 155. First real blood very definitely to the men from down under, and that is a big disappointment after England’s hostile and impressive start.

England have pace bowlers of their own in Harmison, Flintoff, and Jones, each capable of hurling the ball down at over 90 mph. That can do damage, believe me, and three of the Australians are hit. This is brutal stuff, and the crowd lap it up. Yes the object is to hit the wickets preferably, but if you can’t do that, hit the batsman! If you do, they could be gone, for not many batsmen can go about their trade with a broken bone. Broken bones do nicely. The Australian captain is hit a mighty blow. The crowd holler, they love it. Just as well then that the batsmen are dressed up like some superhero from a futuristic comic book. When I was a lad in the sixties the batters didn’t even wear a helmet. Ah, they were the days. Hit them on the head then, and they certainly didn’t bat again. Namby pambies today, isn’t everything!

Round two. Innings two. Australia bat again. The sun comes out. Not a good sign if you are an England supporter. The ball races from the bat in sunnier weather and crashes onto the boundary boards. The ball doesn’t swing so much in the thinner air either. Batting is suddenly easier, much easier, and the famed Australian jauntiness returns. Oh dear. We fear the worst. Certainly the sharp-eyed layers have noticed too. Australia have rapidly returned to being outright favourites. How could we ever have thought otherwise?

The English bowlers toil, and though wickets fall regularly, the Colonials, cruelly still described as such by some, it must get right up their nose, and there really is no point in angering these fellows unnecessarily, tot up 384 all out. England need 420 to win and there are still two and half days left. This match will not end in a draw, unless Mister Buckets up there lashes down for two whole days, and as anyone who knows London knows, that isn’t impossible.

Here’s a stat for you: England have NEVER made more than 400 runs in the fourth innings of a Test match to win the game in the one hundred and thirty five year history of Test cricket. Not a comforting stat to start with, and indeed it has only ever been done two or three times, but never by England.

The England batsmen, the same batters who failed so miserably in round one, come out to face the might of Mister Brett Lee. Mister Lee, and I would call him “Mister” if I were you, is currently the quickest most hostile bowler on the face of the planet. He is quite capable of dispatching the hard (very hard) ball the batsmen’s way at over 100 mph. The openers look nervous, they should be, nay they look frightened, despite the forced glares they send back up the pitch. Mister Lee smiles, as he does, straight blond hair, Aussie soapstar looks. He’s enjoying himself and why shouldn’t he? He is confident his team are about to go one up in the series.

But England start well. They have put on nearly a hundred runs and they haven’t lost a wicket yet, and the odds on an improbable England win are tumbling. Could it possibly be? Then calamity strikes. England collapse, as they have a tendency to do, wickets fall quickly and as day three ends, England are teetering on 156 for five men out. It should be a formality in the morning.

And guess what? On the Sunday morning, (day 4) Mister Buckets gets into his stride and chucks it down. By noon, the pond in my garden has never been so full. There isn’t a chink in the cloud anywhere. The rain is in for the day, so they say, heavy and sustained. Cricket cannot be played in rain. Too dangerous. The pretty TV weather girl grins as she gives us the news. Has she had a bet on the draw too? She wouldn’t be alone.

The stadium is empty. Yet 30,000 souls have paid handsomely for their dose of Ashes cricket. Will they see any play today? Some England supporters applaud the deluge. Applauding rain, it takes some believing. If only we could get out of this match with a draw, they think, all could yet be well. An England win is now out of the question. Odds of 400/1 against by Sunday. At Thursday lunch they had been 4/5 on.

The rain finally stops. It’s still cloudy mind, and the field is sopping. You can’t play cricket on a sopping field either. But it is drying, fast. The umpires come out and inspect the track. They stand and glare down at the twenty-two yards of mowed brown turf. They nod. They look at their light meters. Light meters? Tchh! They nod again, fatally for England we imagine, play will begin in thirty minutes. Oh dear.

The crowd returns in the middle of the afternoon. Where have they all been? All 30,000 of them back to watch the coup-de-grace, or a miracle, but there will be no miracle today. England surrender tamely. All out for 180, and Australia win by a huge margin of 239 runs, and in four days too. Who said cricket was a five-day game? Too easy, by far. England drop seven catches in the match, Australia drop zilch! And included in their takes was a wonderful full length diving effort by Damien Martyn right on the boundary rope to dismiss the dangerous Kevin Pietersen. And no gloves either, no cricket fielders are permitted to wear gloves of any kind, except the wicket keeper. Bare hands only, it can be tough, broken fingers are commonplace. Not many a pro cricketer avoids that penalty.

The first day optimism has vanished and England have a lot of head games to set right before the second Test match starts in Birmingham. Still the picture of Australian worldwide invincibility remains, for it is certainly not just England who cannot touch them. Perhaps the USA could put together a decent side. Now that would be fun, don’t you think?

As for the bettors, 23 million pounds sterling wagered on this match on Betfair.com alone. Betting on cricket is fuelled by huge wagers from the sub continent, India, not that it needs fuelling by anyone. The very length of the match makes it perfect for betting operators. By the way, you can still have a free $30 bet on Betfair, just enter the promo code 6CHE3VPWJ when prompted.

Golf is a truly wonderful game, I love golf, ancient, genteel, skilful as it is, but it really can’t hold a candle to Test cricket. Trust me. Cricket is for the gladiators of the modern age. I couldn’t imagine Tiger Woods facing Brett Lee. I couldn’t imagine anyone wearing an “I’m sane” hat voluntarily facing Brett Lee. Test cricket such as this makes for riveting viewing too. Truly. Cricket a dying sport? Don’t make me laugh. Anyone got a spare ticket for Birmingham? Thought not. Sold out months ago.

The pro of joining Rent-a-coder is getting quality work done at rock bottom prices and the cons are some people cannot complete assignments awarded to them. You will need to ask as many questions possible when it comes to selecting the right coder. Their ability to get the job done is your primary concern!

Sourcing Office Furniture In China is Good Strategy for Office Distributors

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Sourcing new office products in China may not be as easy as getting your main supply from just around the corner. However, it seems that for companies looking to have the lead on the competition in this day and age, they would need to plan on a strategy involving sourcing some product in China. Cost pressure is a reason that many American distributors are turning to the international suppliers who offer the lowest cost in labor, a major cost in any manufacturing or distribution project.

China’s demand for manufacturing facilities for office equipment, chairs, and furniture has grown significantly in the past few years. Many major furniture producers are located in China and the number is growing due to demand from American consumers. The world economy is seemingly recovering which means more opportunities for U.S. companies to export their products, but still China remains strong in the industry and hard to beat.

The U.S. however, does seem to have a terrific niche market in the ergonomic style and high-end design category. With the Herman Miller Aeron and Humanscale Freedom Chair being at the top of their class and uncomparable, the expensive ergonomic models are still mass produced in the United States.

With effective use of transportation and with knowledge of the importing and exporting industry, a company can take advantage of the low prices offered for basically the same office chairs, desks and furniture offered from the U.S. manufacturers.

With higher profit margins and product moving faster due to the outrageously low prices, American office furniture dealers who are taking advantage of these overseas pricing advantages are steps beyond the rest.

Amy Lieberfarb has been in the office furniture and interior sales industry for 11 years and currently runs two online websites dedicated to Office Chairs and Furniture. Mercedes Benz Parts: Affordable, Easy To Find

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Owning a Mercedes vehicle puts you in with an elite category of owners who appreciate the engineering, quality, comfort, and fun-to-drivability that go with every “Benz” produced. With a history spanning well over one hundred years and a solid benchmark reputation to preserve, Mercedes continues to impress its loyal owners and attract interest from those who do not yet own a Mercedes.

Beyond ownership is the maintenance that is done to preserve your vehicle’s mojo. You know keeping your Mercedes well maintained can go a long way toward helping your car operate problem free as well as looking great. Trouble is, parts can get expensive…you’ll pay a premium if you have some garage or dealer do the work for you. Fortunately, you have some options - terrific ones at that - to find, procure, and install the high quality parts your Mercedes deserves without destroying your budget. Please keep reading for some helpful tips.

Owning a Mercedes is just like owning a piece of automotive history. It was back in the 1880s when two German craftsmen, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz, began working on what became known as the first internal combustion engine. Soon thereafter the first “Daimler” vehicles were produced and were later renamed “Mercedes” due to legal conflicts with the Daimler name. Eventually, Daimler and rival automaker Benz merged to produce the Mercedes-Benz name that we know today. Yes, the parent company is now known as DaimlerChrysler but to Mercedes owners calling their cars a Mercedes-Benz is still common even though the Benz name isn’t typically ascribed to specific vehicles, especially in the U.S.

Beyond its history are the vehicles defining Mercedes, particularly those built in the last quarter of a century. In the important U.S. market, Mercedes has registered strong growth with new vehicle sales growth of more than 350% since 1993. An expanded product line and a desire by motorists to own and care for finer automobiles has been a big part of the Mercedes sales surge. New models, including an SUV and compact cars have fueled much of the growth as consumers flock from traditional American and European brands to Mercedes. Mercedes’ legendary quality is an important attraction as their line of diesel powered vehicles typically last for several hundred thousand miles. Indeed, it isn’t unheard of for diesel Mercedes owners to brag about their cars having passed the 500,000 mile mark.

Mercedes attributes much of their success to the design and craftsmanship put into every car. The company is very careful whom they choose to produce OEM parts relying on trusted names such as Bosch, Hengst, Mann, ACM, Conti, and others to outfit their vehicles. Expensive parts, mind you, but well worth it…you drive a Mercedes!

Of course, if you are like many Mercedes aficionados who enjoy working on their own vehicles, you are in good company. In times past, buying OEM parts meant an expensive trip to your dealer’s parts department or a disappointing visit to your local parts store. Disappointing, as you soon discovered that the only German parts available were for Volkswagens.

Today, your choices have expanded immensely due to the rise of online auto wholesalers such as the Auto Parts Warehouse, who specialize in carrying Mercedes Benz parts. Consumers today are turning on their computers, surfing the ‘net, and finding suppliers who have the parts they need and can ship these parts directly to them. With no middle man mark ups, many of the quality wholesalers are able to supply Mercedes Benz parts at prices well below the prevailing retail rates.

Yes, you have a truly fine and capable vehicle in your Mercedes. You can keep your “Benz” running great and looking its best with genuine OEM parts. Shop around and head down the road to real savings today!

Digital Printing vs. Press Printing A Comparison Guide

Monday, July 28th, 2008

When it comes time to print your brand identity materials, there’s one overarching question for you to consider whether to print the resulting materials on a digital printer or traditional press. There are many differences between the two processes, some of which are outlined below.

Digital Printing

Less expensive Digital printing is a direct-to-paper printing process. As a result,
it often runs about one-half of the cost of press printing.

Lose color accuracy Digital printing is a four-color printing process. Four colors
cyan, magenta, yellow, and black are printed in tiny dots that when visually
mixed together, create various colors. This, in addition to the different set-ups and
settings on the machines from press-to-press, batch-to-batch and printer-to-
printer, can produce a wide range of different color results. You can never be certain
what you’ll get.

Lose color range Four-color printing has limitations on the brightness,
saturation, and range of colors available when mixing colors in this way. To
produce bright reds, oranges, blues, and purples, especially, press printing is a
better choice.

Cost of proofing Proofing is one way to produce accurate color. Proofing can be
costly, especially when compared to the overall cost of the job. But, since the proof
is created on the same equipment that the final job is printed on, it is often quite
accurate.

Can be faster Since no pre-press work or press setup is needed, running your job
on a digital press can be faster, depending on how many jobs the printer has in the
queue before yours. Some printers can even offer same-day service. Three days is a
standard turnaround time for many of the web-based digital printing companies.

Limited paper choice Digital presses can only accommodate a limited paper
thickness, and many digital printing companies only offer smooth, white papers.
Thus, if a thick business card is important to you, then digital printing is not your
right choice.

Limited finishing choices Foil stamping, metallic inks, and embossing services are
usually not offered by digital printing houses. Some digital printers also do not offer
die-cutting or special folding services.

Limited choice of material sizes, styles, and formats Digital printers will offer a
very specific “menu” or range of products. If you want to create innovative
marketing materials, such as the brochure-style business cards that we create at elf
design, then digital printing is not a choice for your project. Large formats are also
not available with many digital printers, as the largest paper size they can
accommodate is 11″ x 17″.

Press Printing

More costly The difference in costs is mainly due to setup costs. For press
printing, films must be produced, and plates may have to be produced as well,
which are additional items that add to the overall cost. Additional time is involved in
setting up and aligning the press, as well as washing the press. Also, there are more
overruns from traditional printing, since you cannot program in a specific number of
pages to be printed as you can with a digital printer. Most printers consider
overruns to be billable, or they add an additional cost for that into the initial
estimate. Jobs done on a press will typically run about twice the cost of digital
printing.

Excellent color accuracy The Pantone Matching System (PMS) offers great color
accuracy. Pantone colors are mixed to precise, pre-set specifications, which are
printed each year in their color matching guides. You can consult these books to see
exactly what the final color will look like in advance. It’s a lot like going to the paint
store and specifying colors for your home on the paint chips they offer you know
what you’ll get. So, if color accuracy is important to you, then press printing may be
the best choice.

Brighter colors are available Since the Pantone colors are mixed using inks, they
can be created to be much brighter and more intense. So, if lively colors are
important to your brand image, then press printing may be the way to go.

Cost of proofing For four-color press jobs, proofing is often not too expensive
when compared to the overall cost of the job. However, it can be inaccurate,
depending on the type of proof run and the type of press on which your final job
will be printed.

For two- or three- color jobs printed using the Pantone system, complete color
proofing is often not available. However, samples of the colors are available in the
Pantone books. And, inexpensive laser prints or inkjet prints can be created to view
the positioning of the elements of the page. With a little imagination, you can
visualize how the final job will look.

Press printing can take longer than digital There are several additional steps
involved in press printing, which are taken care of using direct-to-press, digital
technology. Films and plates must be made, the press set up, run the job and then
tune us needed for drying. Then cutting, folding, and other finishing must take
place.

Types of paper Choose from an entire rainbow of paper colors fire-engine red
to deep blue, sunflower yellow to pitch black. There is also a wide range of
thicknesses and textures from which to choose, including specialty papers, such as
vellum and metallic papers. If you are considering using nontraditional paper your
card or materials, press printing is the best way to go.

Fine line screens are available The result of this is that even under close
inspection, the color will look smooth and seamless. It will also appear brighter and
more intense.

Wide range of finishing techniques All finishing options are possible with press
printing. Metallic inks can be run through the press as easily as can a nonmetallic
ink. Embossing, die cutting, and foil stamping can be done in traditional printing
houses. You can create materials that really stand out using these techniques.

Innovative formats, shapes, and sizes are possible Traditional press printing can
accommodate a wide range of paper sizes and can result in innovative and creative
finished projects. This is largely due to the “have-it-your-way” range of options,
where you can specify special sizes and finishing techniques.

We hope that the above primer on the pros and cons of both digital printing and
press printing helps you to decide which you will choose to produce your materials.

Auto Loan Financing - How to Pick a Lender?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

For the most part, car buyers seek the lender that offers the best financing package. This includes reasonable interest rates, terms, and fees. Those new to the world of car buying may be unaware of their options. However, several lenders are willing to offer you money for a car.

Dealership Financing

Most car buyers receive financing through the car dealership. This method of financing has disadvantages and advantages. Some dealerships submit your information to various lenders looking to secure the best financing package. This is great for obtaining the best deal.

Moreover, some dealerships have relationships with sub prime lenders. Sub prime lenders specialize in high risk loans. On the other hand, dealerships have a habit of increasing the interest rate in order to boosts their profit.

Credit Unions and Banks

Car buyers also have the option of securing financing through their bank or credit union. In most cases, these financial institutions offer reasonable rates for their current customers. Arthritis - Lie

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

The one lie that arthritis sufferers hear most is that, “All we can do is manage the pain”. “You will just have to live with it”.

It is true, that through medication, all you can do is manage the pain. What they don’t tell you is that the painkillers actually increase the pain. So as the meds ware off, the pain comes back, as bad or worse than before.

You would think that people would notice this. Actually our people have been so brainwashed in the “Doctor knows Best” mindset, that they don’t question what they are told.

The truth is that you don’t have to suffer with arthritis. You can do more than manage the pain. You can get rid of arthritis pain once and for all.

The reason you don’t hear about this, is that it costs nothing for you to do it your self, and relatively little, if you get some help. Remember this fact. There is no money in healthy, pain-free people.

Your doctor either does not know the truth about arthritis, or he/she thinks you are too stubborn to change, so why bother to tell you how to get rid of the arthritis.

I personally don’t think you are that stubborn or foolish. I think that if you knew the truth, and what to do about it, that you would want to change whatever lifestyle practices you can, to get rid of the pain.

To get rid of Arthritis pain, you first need to stop causing it to develop. Then you need to give your body the tools it needs to rebuild healthy tissue.

There are several lifestyle issues that work together to cause arthritis.

. An acid forming diet, causing the leaching of minerals from the bones and teeth

. An abundance of inorganic minerals in the diet

. A lack of exercise, causing inorganic minerals to settle in the joints

. A lack of living, enzyme rich foods, in the diet

The SAD (standard American diet) is high in animal products, refined sugar, and grain products. All of these are acid forming in the human digestive system. That means that the end ash after they are used up is on the acid side of neutral. We were designed for an alkaline diet.

Inorganic minerals are those without living enzymes attached by plants. Only plants can create the organic minerals we need. We are not equipped to take in inorganic minerals and transform them into organic minerals. We were not designed that way. Cooking destroys the organic minerals by killing the enzymes attached by the plants.

Exercise increases circulation in the joints aiding the removal of inorganic minerals that can clump together forming sharp crystals that can cause great pain in the joints.
We were designed for a diet of raw plant material. We can handle some cooked food as long as we get adequate raw living food to supply our enzyme rich nutritional needs.

Charles Snyder is a health minister. He has a web site where you can learn much more about this topic. You can read how he suffered with arthritis and how he overcame it. You can ask him questions and get helpful answers as well as support for your journey back to pain-free-health. If you subscribe to his newsletter you will receive information not available to visitors to the website.

Millions Have Misused ADHD Drugs

Monday, July 21st, 2008

A study released this week estimates that more than 7 million Americans have misused Adderall, Ritalin and other stimulant medications used to treat ADHD, and that 75,000 showed signs of addiction to stimulant medications.

This recent study, published in the online journal “Drug and Alcohol Dependence,” culled data from a 2002 national survey of about 67,000 households. Research found that men and women were equally likely to abuse ADHD medications but that women seemed to be at a greater risk for dependency. Men, on the other hand, seemed to be at a greater risk of abuse.

A surprising aspect of this study was in revealing who is most likely to misuse stimulant drugs. Most often, college students abuse Adderall and Ritalin in an attempt to boost their academic performance. A previous study showed that stimulant drugs are most commonly abused in highly competitive colleges, with B-average and below college students twice as likely to illegally use prescription drugs.

College student increasingly recognize that Adderall and Ritalin are much more effective than coffee or caffeine pills at helping them sit down, focus, get their work done - through the night if necessary - and still not interfere with their social lives. The drug use becomes a significant problem when college students start to abuse Adderall and other amphetamine drugs, becoming addicted to them or experiencing toxic effects.

With approximately 1.5 million adults and 2.5 million children currently receiving prescriptions for ADHD medications, finding a friend or a friend of a friend willing to sell off their drugs is not very difficult for many people. Most students reported getting Adderall, the stimulant of choice due to its long lasting effects, from those that were diagnosed with ADHD. One Adderall pill can fetch $5, which makes selling off prescription meds a lucrative deal for those with access to the drugs.

Colleges and universities are also reporting a sharp increase in the amount of students making appointments at campus medical centers to obtain their own ADD diagnosis.

Not until recently have studies examined the abuse of prescription drugs. One study revealed that those who use prescription stimulants are more likely to engage in binge drinking, drunk driving, and using illegal drugs as well. Another study indicated that those from wealthier backgrounds were more likely to abuse both legal and illegal drugs.

In light of these past studies and the new study showing the high rate of abuse and addiction, some experts believe that the real focus of ADHD medication dangers should center on the abuse of Adderall and other ADHD drugs - not the side effects. Researchers point out that 75,000 people addicted to stimulants is more worrisome than the 100-200 adults who have had strokes as a result of using stimulant ADHD drugs.

Earlier this month, the FDA advisory panel recommended that the FDA put Black Box warnings on all ADHD medications. This black box warning - the most severe of all FDA warnings - would state that stimulant ADHD drugs can cause cardiovascular events and even death, especially if there’s a preexisting heart condition.

The FDA panel expressed a hope of curtailing what is seen as out-of-control over-prescribing of potentially dangerous drugs. Prescriptions for ADHD drugs have doubled over the past five years. The hope is that the black box warning will remind parents that just because a drug is legal does not mean it is safe. Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta are “Class B” drugs and are in the same drug class as cocaine. These drugs have potential for abuse, addiction and physical and mental harm - just as other drugs in this elevated classification do.

Getting in Shape: 10,000 Steps to Terrific Health

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

What if I could show you a completely simple, inexpensive, low risk, foolproof method to lose some weight, get healthy, and get in shape? Sound too good to be true? Well, it is true, and all it takes is a serious commitment and a $15 step-counting pedometer.

It has been one full year now since I first strapped on a pedometer and started getting my 10,000 steps in a day. I’ll be honest, at times it has been tough, but the rewards have been remarkable.

I have no idea who first started the concept of getting in 10,000 steps a day as a way to get fit, but sometime in 2003 the idea started to get considerable press. The University of Minnesota thought so much of the idea that this year (2004) they passed out free pedometers to every single staff member of the University. I first read about 10,000 steps in a newspaper and then heard about it on the radio. I looked up pedometers on Ebay and bought two step counters for five bucks each. I gave one of them to my wife who loved it but within a month had lost it. I managed to hang onto mine and it worked perfectly for 11 months before it finally stopped working. These first step counters were mechanical and needed no batteries. You just clipped them on your belt, started walking, and they counted every step you took.

I was in New York last month, to give a talk on Long Island, when my first stepper quit on me. I was one day without it and withdrawal symptoms were quickly setting in. I went to a Sportsmart and for $14.95 bought a digital replacement, the one that I’m wearing right now. It is a Sportsline 330 brand and it doesn’t count calories or miles, just steps. But that’s exactly what I want it to do.

As I write this I have exactly 3,627 steps on my pedometer. This means that I have plenty of walking yet to do today, but I know that I’ll do it.

I am a writer; it’s what I do for a living. Last October I had just finished writing back-to-back books. I had no sooner finished writing Safe Sex in the Garden, for Ten Speed Press than I had to immediately dive into working on, What the Experts May NOT Tell You About: Growing the Perfect Lawn, for Time Warner Books. As a result of the almost constant work on those two books I spent close to a solid year glued to my computer. Now, computers are handy beasts, no doubt about that, but working at one is hardly what we’d call good exercise. I had gained weight, some 30+ pounds of it, and I was 56 years old, fat, and out of shape.

I finished the last book, sent it off to the publisher and bought my first pedometer. That very first day it arrived I put it on and went out and walked until I had my 10,000 steps. Quickly I found out that this took time, effort, and energy. That night my legs were a little sore but I felt really good about myself. I was doing something positive, something that might well get my big rear back in shape.

I discovered that pedometers work best if there are no clothes covering them. They have to be free to be able to register each step and need to “feel” the movement. Also, shorter people get a “better deal” with step counters. If a 6 footer and a 5 footer both walk five miles together, the shorter person may well get in all of his 10,000 steps, while the taller one may well still be a few thousand short. I’m 6′ 2″ tall myself, so I need to get in plenty of mileage to get my 10,000. Shorter people claim though that they have to work harder and step faster to keep up with their long legged companions, so I suppose it all works out in the end.

Most of my life I have worked out and tried to stay in shape. I’ve boxed, jogged, lifted weights, done calisthenics, played tennis, hiked, done isometrics, you name it, and I did it. And all of these things worked too, to a point. But none of them worked half as well as putting on that pedometer and saying to myself, “Tom, you will get in at least 10,000 steps every single day from now on. Rain or shine, feeling great or not, busy or not, you’re going to get in the 10,000 steps every single day.”

I am one of those people who love to plan things out, sometimes in excess no doubt. For many years I’ve kept a list (100 Things I’m Going to DO Before I Die) and I take my list seriously. If I put something on my list, I’m going to do it. If I tell people I’m going to do something, I’m going to give it everything I’ve got and try to do it. I like to think that bottom line, each of us is only as good as his or her word.

At any rate, for this past full year now I have gotten in a minimum of 10,000 steps every single day. During that time I lost almost forty pounds and got into pretty decent shape too. My resting pulse is lower; my blood pressure (which had been high) is perfect, my pant’s waist size dropped from (I’m embarrassed to admit!) size 44 to size 34. A few months ago I knocked off one of the things on my list of 100. I climbed Mt Whitney, at 14,497.7 feet in elevation, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. It was a 19-hour, extremely tough hike and without all the groundwork I’d done with that pedometer there’s no way I’d have ever made it. Since climbing Whitney, I’ve found that every time anything I’m doing seems at all hard, I suddenly think, “Hey, you climbed Mt. Whitney!” and then whatever it is no longer seems all that hard at all.

A Dozen tips: Making your pedometer work for you:

  1. Buy a simple step-counting pedometer. Don’t bother with more expensive ones that count the calories and the miles. Just the steps.

  2. Decide to get in your 10,000 steps a day, no exceptions, and commit to it.

  3. Wear a belt and clip the pedometer on over one of your hips and it will count steps better.

  4. Put your pedometer on as soon as you get up in the morning. No point in not getting “credit” for any steps you take.

  5. Before you eat breakfast go out and walk around the block quickly; get in some steps right off the bat.

  6. Keep checking your pedometer often through the day; have an idea all the time of how many steps you already have in and how many you still need.

  7. Whenever you drive somewhere, never park close; always park far away and get in some extra steps.

  8. On long drives stop often and go for short, fast walks. At rest stops walk around the entire rest stop once or twice on each stop.

  9. Try to take at least one long walk each day, one where you get in 3 to 4,000 steps.

  10. No matter what, try and get in at least 7 to 8,000 steps each day before the sun goes down.

  11. Don’t go to bed at night unless you have your 10,000 steps. If it is 11pm and you’re dog-tired and you only have 6,000 steps, well, get out that door! and start walking.

  12. Every time you’re standing at the sink, waiting in line, looking in the mirror, bounce up and down and pick up some extra “steps.” They all count. Walk around while you’re talking on the phone. Never ask someone to go get something for you while you sit there. Get up and get it yourself…more steps. Use every excuse you can to pick up extra steps.

Okay now, here’s a challenge from me to you. I dare you to go get a pedometer and commit to the 10,000 steps a day. I dare you to get in as good a shape as I’m in right now. Yes, you’re a busy person and this takes time. But life is short and why shouldn’t we invest our time in something that will make us look better, feel better, in something that will make us stronger? Go on; go for it. I double dare you.
